The Trump administration intends to ask Congress to allow E15, an ethanol-gas blend, to be sold at the pumps year-round, a U.S. official familiar with the matter told CBS News.
The 15% ethanol blend is usually only available part of the year under a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency as temperatures rise to help ease high gas prices. The administration plans to make the request when it submits a supplemental funding request to lawmakers, the official said.
Several requests on budget matters and non-budgetary matters were scheduled to be sent to the Hill on Wednesday.
A lower 10% ethanol blend is sold all year, but the 15% blend is subject to waivers because gas with the higher ethanol content evaporates more quickly in hot weather and contributes to higher levels of air pollution or smog. For this reason, federal rules normally require switching back to more costly blends.
The move to make E15 available year-round represents the White House's latest effort to tame gas prices that have risen because of the war with Iran. President Trump repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he supported making E15 available year-round.
It was unclear if the proposal would have the votes to pass.
Lawmakers from corn-growing states and other proponents of E15 argue the blend gives drivers a cheaper option at the gas pump and creates rural jobs.
E15 prices are generally about 25 cents per gallon lower than regular gas, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. The White House has said E15 can collectively save over $20 billion in annual fuel costs.

Sounds like Trump intends to keep the war going into the fall and winter.
Wonderful. This helps the people who voted for him so much. /s
Should be getting rid of ethanol. Not extending it. This is just another dumb idea.

As a retired mechanic I will simply say that ethanol in your fuel is sabotage.
As a 63 year old American Christian I will say that no politician has ever NOT eventually disappointed me.
to recalibrate to E85 but you do get a little more horsepower
= = =
A little more horsepower than what?
E15 prices are generally about 25 cents per gallon lower than regular gas, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. The White House has said E15 can collectively save over $20 billion in annual fuel costs.Spend $40 billion on corn subsidies and E15 plants to save $20 billion.
It ruined three small engines of mine (had to replace carburetors at $100/machine) before I bought the VERY expensive canned regular gasoline at Home Depot. Then I found a few Maverick gas stations around Coeur d’Alene sell ethanol-free gas. So you either pay $20/gallon for the canned gas or scout out a station.
NO I mean NO...
Calm.down no on is taking away boat gas. E0 is still sold and will keep being sold. So will E10 as mandated in EPA cities , all this does is legalize the sale of E15 year round. It still must be in labeled pumps, with different nozzles from both E10,E85, and E0 you have to be special to no see and then ignore all the signs and warnings not to mix E15 with normal E10.
Choice is good my Ecoboost loves E15 and E85 more the high octane opens up higher boost levels and gobs more horsepower from the twin turbos. The hit in mpg is small couple miles vs E10 we have to use in DFW by federal law due to our air quality. E85 is a 10-20% hit to mpg so unless you want to run it like race gas it needs to be 15% or more cheaper per gallon vs E10 to justify the cost for commuting. For use where I want 500+ hp out of my twin turbos the price is worth the performance boost its not commuter fuel at that point.
My beater car is a 2012 Chevy Sonic with the 1.4 litre turbo. It has 208k and still gets 38 - 42 mpg. Its exhaust is very clean, and most younger vehicles burn even cleaner today. Given the amount of oil being produced thanks to more drilling and fracking we just don’t need ethanol. I say use the corn to make booze (kidding). Seriously I think the farmland could be put to better use.
Whoa!! lol...
Hope youre right!
This is the exact opposite of what I voted for.
It will reduce it the same percentage as the ethanol percentage! My dad bought a new Prius and because of his business habits he kept meticulous fuel records, he could show me with a 3 to 4 day accuracy the date the ethanol additive started in the fall and ended in the spring in Eugene Oregon. His fuel use was 10% more or 10% less without fail, he kept records for 13 years with that Prius! Other than the subsidy for farmers there is a zero sum game with ethanol. And it comes with its own unique problems. So it’s absolutely a waste of money at the pump and taxpayers pocket!
I disagree completely. Just like No tax on Social security is garbage.
Unfortunately the corn is already destroyed. We lost about 12 to 16 breeds of corn in the past 26 years. I couldn’t find that source right now, but it was predictable.
This is terrible.
All lies and gaslighting.
E15 gets 25% less miles-per-gallon than ethanol-free gasoline. That is best case with engines designed to run properly on E15. Many engines do not run well on this fuel.
There is no annual savings in fuel costs. With all of the subsides to farming corporations and increased distribution expenses, E15 and E10 are a net increase to fuel costs.
It is long past time for these programs to end.
