The Trump administration intends to ask Congress to allow E15, an ethanol-gas blend, to be sold at the pumps year-round, a U.S. official familiar with the matter told CBS News.
The 15% ethanol blend is usually only available part of the year under a waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency as temperatures rise to help ease high gas prices. The administration plans to make the request when it submits a supplemental funding request to lawmakers, the official said.
Several requests on budget matters and non-budgetary matters were scheduled to be sent to the Hill on Wednesday.
A lower 10% ethanol blend is sold all year, but the 15% blend is subject to waivers because gas with the higher ethanol content evaporates more quickly in hot weather and contributes to higher levels of air pollution or smog. For this reason, federal rules normally require switching back to more costly blends.
The move to make E15 available year-round represents the White House's latest effort to tame gas prices that have risen because of the war with Iran. President Trump repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he supported making E15 available year-round.
It was unclear if the proposal would have the votes to pass.
Lawmakers from corn-growing states and other proponents of E15 argue the blend gives drivers a cheaper option at the gas pump and creates rural jobs.
E15 prices are generally about 25 cents per gallon lower than regular gas, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. The White House has said E15 can collectively save over $20 billion in annual fuel costs.

Massive grift for big ag companies. Probably also an attempt to drive down gas prices at the pump (through subsidies as you point out).
Before ethanol a car could sit for years and still run on the old gas, albeit badly. But one filled with an ethanol blend will need a new tank, sender and pump because it will be full of water.
With an ethanol blend, plastic tanks are needed.
The largest gas producer in the world is.....the US
It really sucks in gas power equipment. I can’t tell you how many carburetors I’ve had to replace in mowers, chain saws, power washers, log splitters, snowblowers, etc. It eats away gaskets, diaphragms, and will absorb water. You have to add expensive stabilizers or your engine probably won’t start after setting for a couple months.
Ethanol in gas is something he’s been all for since the 2016 campaign.
I don’t like it, but it isn’t something new we haven’t known about. So let’s see how many people falsely claim he’s “selling out” on a campaign promise, just like they have with other issues like being aggressive with terrorist states like Iran - another thing he has *always* been.
Ethanol should be freed of all federal mandates of any kind and left 100% to marketplace decisions; no vehicle owners, oil refiners or gas stations should be required to use Ethanol or any other “biofuel”.
Well, or so maybe you thought. Fuel labeled as E85 can contain anywhere between 51% to 83% ethanol. So, you have some mix of ethanol there, but it probably wasn’t 40%.
Exactly. Trump’s right on 95% of the issues. I’ll take it. I’ll criticize the policies on the other 5%, but the policies not the man.
I’ll criticize the man for behavior, but frankly I prefer his honest approach even if it can be a bit crass at times.
I see they’ve already started before I even commented. “not what I voted for.”
Yeah, it was.
As long as ethanol is subsidized they’ll keep using it. They care about their profit margin, and if they can get the ethanol cheap because it’s subsidized they’ll use it.
I have normally avoided ethanol as much as I can....However, with the recent gas prices I decided to try out the flex fuel option on my old 2006 Silverado.
The thing loves it! It probably added 15-HP and I can buy E-85 for $1.99 / gal.
I lost about 1/2 mile per gallon in mileage though.
ditto and more ditto.
Found one that has a jerky bar. Haven’t tried the venison sausage yet.
Another way I could have, perhaps should have, said it - as long as we subsidize ethanol there’s not such thing as a fair marketplace for fuels.
And reduces mpg. The savings is more apparent than real.
Yes, that’s right, 51 to 80-something% so probably less than E40 but I didn’t want to chance it with my engine. The gas mileage still dropped significantly, from 23 to 17 mpg, with whatever it was greater than E10.
I only run ethanol free in my motorcycles. Most of the Maverik gas stations around here sell it.
The Pure Gas app is sometimes wrong when it lists stations that sell it.
Let’s be honest - Trump has always been for this, it’s not a surprise for anyone who has paid attention. If I had to guess it’s Trump’s way of shoring up the farm vote for November.
Farmers have been pretty pissed off at him for high diesel and fertilizer prices the past few months. Line everyone else they think THEIR ox is being gored. This is a feint to them. But it *is* consistent with everything he said before. Anyone who wants to take the position, “if I knew Trump supported ethanol I wouldn’t have voted for him,” should be mad at themselves for not paying attention - not Trump.
Separately - I don’t want E15 in my car, so I don’t like this. I can say that without saying, “this isn’t what I voted for.”
I’d have to drive nearly 25 miles to the nearest station that sells ethanol free gas.
Could be concession to get the SAVE act passed.
