The Iran Deal: The Elephant in the Room
American Thinker ^ | 22 Jun, 2026 | Lewis Dovland

The Iranian threat will continue until the nature of Shi'ite religious extremism is recognized.

Much of the celebration surrounding the latest agreement with Iran pigeonholes a fundamental issue -- one that, if left unaddressed, will ultimately render any agreement temporary at best and meaningless at worst.

The problem is not simply Iran's nuclear capabilities. Nor is it the wording of any diplomatic arrangement. The problem is the belief system that guides the ruling clerical regime itself.

Before proceeding, it is worth acknowledging what has already been accomplished. President Trump deserves considerable credit for applying pressure on Iran, weakening its ability to fund proxy organizations such as Hezb'allah and Hamas, reducing attacks against Israel and Gulf Arab states, and severely degrading Iran's nuclear infrastructure. Those are significant achievements that enhance regional and global security.

Yet these successes address symptoms rather than the underlying disease.

Western policymakers often approach Iran as though they are dealing with a conventional nation-state pursuing conventional interests. They assume that economic incentives, military deterrence, and diplomatic negotiations can alter Tehran's long-term behavior. That assumption may be flawed because it overlooks the ideological framework through which Iran's rulers view the world. So far, Iran has complied not out of agreement, but to avoid further pain. Which is not a long-term solution.

Iran is governed by a Shia Islamist regime. More specifically, its ruling clerics largely adhere to the Twelver branch of Shiite Islam. Twelvers believe in the eventual return of the Twelfth Imam, known as the Mahdi, who is expected to establish justice and righteousness before the end of history. This is not a criticism of the Muslim faith but to point out an important factor in these negotiations.

There is considerable debate among scholars regarding the political implications of Twelver theology. However, it is undeniable

Ultimately the Iranian people will have to fix their own problems.

The elephant in the room is the November midterm elections. A shooting war with Iran to defend Israel is not popular politically, especially not when it causes gas prices to spike. This is what constrains Trump.

They hated the Shah and they don’t want the mullahs. What the Shah and the mullahs have in common is their willingness to kill and jail people. What that means is the country can only be ruled with an iron hand. Democracy is not for everyone.

Meanwhile Trump has a naval strangle hold on bulk shipments of oil, including to Chayna. Iran remains broke. That’s what maritime strategy executed by a seapower looks like. And Chayna needs this all to work out worse than anybody.

Oh an Iran’s frightening nuclear capabilities are dust and rubble. Worrying for the future, but not a present problem. So are their long range ballistic missile factories.

economic incentives

They certainly had a lot of money from oil before.

It only exacerbated, not mitigated, their terrorist activities.

The people of Iran were so angry with the Islamic life they began to burn down Mosques. The regime admits to hundreds burnt down. Why for the first time in history was an Islamic country rebelling against Islam itself? Because of the Internet. Without lies, Islam dies. The censorship was by-passed.

A successful revolution against Islam could spread into other countries, just like the American Revolution eventually spread to take down the Kings in Europe.

In short, the Iranian mullahs are all waiting for Godot, whom they call the Mahdi. Somehow, the Mahdi does not celebrate Marti Gras...

"Without lies, Islam dies."

Just like communism/socialism. Both islam and communism abhor truth.

Agreed. In the Obama years this was championed as the "Arab Spring". Of course, the Iranians aren't Arabs, and the leftist media and social media can't describe the Iranian revolts as a positive thing.

One thing we can't let be repeated from the Arab Spring is cut-throat dictators being replaced with other cut-throat dictators (loyal to the Muslim Brotherhood in the case of the Arab Spring). It's better if the Iranians have a secular or Christian leadership.

Absolutely! Which is why the Left does everything it can to censor thought! You connect the dots and notice blacks and illegal immigrants are much more prone to criminal activity. You can't notice that! That's RACIST! Shut up!

Mozlems rape you women, mooch off your welfare state and steal even more beyond that. Don't You Dare Notice! That is *GASP* Islamophobic! Shut Up! The UK has already arrested more of its citizens over this than the well established tyrannies around the World.

Trump has a history of doing the right thing over political thing. But the right thing is proves to be the best political thing in the end.

It's a math/logic issue, really.

If you have an opponent (Iran) whose constitution involves tactical lying, especially against non-MoFos, always, as a keystone of their pseudoreligion;

But you (we) continue to negotiate, repeatedly, in presumed good faith, with them,

then it is we Americans who are the absurdists and fools.

Why is it so terribly hard for Americans and other non-MoFos to understand and internalize this fact?

You can't negotiate treaties, contracts, verbal agreements, times of appointments, anything.

This is the key culture clash. They reject things like Western objective truth AND telling the truth. Christianity adheres to the truth so much that our Lord said He was Truth, himself, identically and always.

There is no 'Coexisting' with these people. No negotiating or dealmaking. They live and breathe death, lies, evil, trickery, murder, rape, child and animal sexual abuse, necrophilia, and they then brag about it. It is ego-syntonic to all of them. Just ask them.

It is WE who need to pull our heads out and realize this, and act accordingly.

If they manage to overthrow the IRGC they will need a strong man and an effective secret police to keep the communists and jihadis at bay. The same hipsters that wanted the shah gone, now that they’re old, remember the Iran of those days as a relatively free country.

Obama. What a creep that lazy loser was/is. He deliberately makes his library a gigantic eyesore that you can’t help but notice. ‘Look At Me!’ it screams. It even has a lame quote in giant letters that are almost impossible to read, as if it was some kind of profound wisdom handed down by the Lord Himself. People say he was a closet Mozlem . The truth is he has always just worshipped himself .

There is no way to logically reason with
Iranian Islamic Shia Twelver Mullahs

who believe that a 5-year-old DEAD child who has been DEAD 1,152+ YEARS (873โ€“874 A.D.) is ALIVE and reading their prayer requests from deep inside a well behind the Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, Iran

The so-called Shia Islam Twelfth Imam (D-Qom, Iran)

President Donald Trump
needs to know about this
