I don’t mind Juneteenth as an unofficial holiday. It reflects the best of the Republican Party. The best of the Union war effort in the Civil War. And a noble cause - the end of slavery - in the face of public opposition. Lincoln was politically brave for pushing it. And the Union army was right to enforce the abolition of slavery in the South including Texas. It is a reminder of a time when the Democrats most definitely were the bad guys - just plain evil for wanting to preserve slavery.
But alas, we can’t have a Juneteenth that commemorates that. It has turned into a modern political wedge issue used by, ironically, the same Democrat Party that wanted to literally keep blacks in chains. It has been perverted into part of the liberal pantheon of movement politics.
