Happy 17th to a great little country, with the curse and blessings of so many volcanoes. Without them they’d be safer, and without them they wouldn’t have the vast geothermal resources to make their electricity.

Great country, definitely worth a visit. (I took family there last summer.)

The fact that they declared independence while Denmark was still occupied seems tacky to me. Interestingly, Iceland was neutral during the war, though occupied by the Brits.

We visited in the winter just before Christmas and it was wonderful - super cold, lots of snow, lots of sun. We saw the volcanoes, walked along the continental divide in a massive blizzard, visited museums, including the excellent Saga Museum, and art galleries, saw the original Geysir which literally gave its name to all geysers everywhere. Lots of cool stuff to see. Food was pretty good. And because it has only been settled for less than 3,000 years, there’s a lot of history. We never saw a police person the entire time we were there including in the airport.

Very surprising date — 11 days after the D-Day invasion during the throes of WWII.
