Russia is the largest country on Earth. They neither want nor need Ukraine, but they object to Ukraine (which means "borderland" in Russian and has been the path of multiple invasions of Russa) becoming a military base for NATO and the EU.
The EU however, like all socialist monstrosities, is running out of other people's money. They look upon the agricultural and natural resource abundance in Ukraine and see more other people's money they can steal and spend. They have plans to divvy it up into five pieces once they fight Russia to the last Ukrainian life.
No, Putin desperately wanted Ukraine, although he has failed he is throwing everything at a desperate fight to hold on to what he has managed to take.
Putin was an officer in the vast Russian empire of just a few decades ago, Russia never has enough, taking is how they grow.
LOL, and how did Russia become the "largest country" on earth? By invading neighbors and seizing their land, which Putin continues in the 21st century by invading Georgia in 2008 and invading Ukraine in 2014 and 2022.
Educate yourself. Ukraine does not mean "borderland" in Russian. Some interpret the name Ukraine coming from the "Old Slavic" (used in 7th – 14th Century) term for 'borderland'. Ukraine before Russia's attack in 2014 was an independent country larger than France with a population of about 40 million, and not some "borderland".
Russia "peacefully" became the world's largest country without ever "attacking" any of their neighbors.
