U.S. residents are aging and having fewer babies, with fertility rates at a record low and trailing what’s needed for the population to replace itself, part of a widespread global trend with deep economic consequences.
With President Donald Trump’s tough limits on immigration, and his effort to deport some immigrants already in the country, the U.S. may be heading for an era when the median age continues to drift up and the population eventually starts to fall each year. That would be a first for a country built by waves of religious, economic and political refugees from around the world. Economic stress on social safety nets may follow.
For most of U.S. history, more people were born each year than died. That “natural increase” has been slowing as big generations like the post-World War Two Baby Boomers aged and the generations that followed had fewer babies.
Current projections show that by around 2030, deaths will exceed births each year. Immigration, which could offset that, has become politically fraught, falling dramatically under Trump.
Should current trends hold, overall population growth is heading to zero.
The net result: Population growth has already slowed to a crawl. Since 2020, the U.S. population has increased by an average of 0.6% per year, about a third of the pace during the 1950s, in the middle of the 1946-1964 baby boom that gave the “Boomer” generation their nickname. Most of that meager growth has come from immigration. With Trump, that has been thrown into reverse and the U.S. population is on track to flatline around 2050.

Right now we need the population to decline. We’ve got AT LEAST another 25 million illegal aliens to deport and frankly, we’d be a lot better off if we denaturalized and deported about 10-15 million foreigners we let in since the early 1990s who we never should have allowed in....think Somalis, Afghans, Muslims in general, Haitians, Africans, etc etc.
+100. Everyone else on this thread is blaming women and environmentalism without taking into account that wages haven’t kept pace with productivity or inflation since the 70’s. People who can’t afford children will avoid having them. Sometimes it really is that simple.

The strongest predictors of population growth are average household wealth and level of education, especially in women. People who can save money don't have to rely on children to care from them as they age, and in affluent societies, most children survive to adulthood, so there's less motivation to have a large number in the hope that more survive.
Additionally, if you have women pursuing education and careers, they aren't going to want to start having children in their teens or early twenties as they did a century or more ago. The only thing that would change this trend would be imposing a Taliban-style social order that basically bars women from education and careers, and I doubt that would make much headway in the US or Europe.

Most middle-class people are paying at least 1/3 of their income in rent/mortgage. Then there’s the ever-rising costs of food and gas. Those are just the basic necessities of life. So it’s not that people are saving so much money they don’t see the need for kids but that kids have become a net expense rather than a net source of income. It costs 5 figures just to give birth at an American hospital. Then there’s food, diapers, clothes, etc. Don’t want your kid to grow up with gender confusion? That’s another 5-figure bill for private school tuition over the course of the kid’s school years. Meanwhile your kid can’t legally earn income until 16 because of child labor laws. Financially it just doesn’t make sense to have kids anymore. If wages caught up to productivity more people could afford to have kids.

I fail to see why a forced wealth transfer of wealth from savers to those who didn’t save is a sign of a first world country.
Seems more like something you’d do to bribe a moronic population who doesn’t have the ability to not consume and likes to steal.
While it is morally significant, I think that demographically insignificant compared to the others.
I predict flatlining (population maximum) to come ~2035. Let’s see if that is more accurate than the experts.

Around the year 2000 I had two married sons who with their wives were in their early 30s. They had one child among them and I saw no signs of more on the way as they were living in 1 bedroom apartments. I had a HELOC on my house, so I offered them each $10,000 to put toward buying a home. They accepted, each bought a 3 bedroom fixer-upper, and now I have 4 grandchildren all out of high school and working or in the US Army. Best investment I ever made.
