When President Trump gave thanks to those who had helped him reach an initial cease-fire agreement with Iran, he praised two world leaders he has called his friends — Xi Jinping of China and Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.
The leaders, he said, had aided the Americans in sealing the deal with the Iranians, or at least had helped set the conditions by not sending oil and gas tankers or other commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz to compromise a U.S blockade aimed at pressuring Iran.
“He was a total gentleman,” the American president said of Mr. Xi in an interview with The New York Times on Sunday, as he was celebrating his 80th birthday with a dinner and an Ultimate Fighting Championship cage match on the South Lawn of the White House. “He didn’t send a tanker, along with 20 destroyers on each side of it, to try and break up the blockade.”
In recent months, Mr. Trump has embraced China as a partner. He had to retreat from a trade war with the country after retaliation by the Chinese government, and he subsequently praised Mr. Xi as a tough negotiator.
He has also been trying to improve relations with Moscow, though Mr. Putin has resisted the American president’s efforts to get Russia and Ukraine to accept a settlement to end the full-scale Russian invasion that began in 2022.
China is Iran’s most powerful partner and the biggest buyer of oil from the country. China has worked in its own interests and acted with caution during the war. It has prodded Iran to continue negotiating with the United States, even when the mediated talks seemed to flag.
At the same time, some Chinese companies have tried sending weapons to Iran, included shoulder-fired missiles, the U.S. State Department said.

Trump-no greater friend no worse enemy. I think he’s making them an offer they can’t refuse. The question is if those 2 leaders are betting on the democrats in 2 years and will THEY be around?
I have to laugh to keep from crying.
I’m not even sure that practically speaking? JCPOA v2.0 (but with more goodies for Iran!) isn’t the least bad option in the practical here and now.
But there’s no getting around a simple fact: This is basically the worst of GWB and Oblahblah in middle east smore.
It’s only 8:00.
Did we really need help from Russia and China (if there was any, what was it?)
to snatch a humiliating defeat from the Jews of certain Victory?
“In recent months, Mr. Trump has embraced China as a partner. He had to retreat from a trade war with the country after retaliation by the Chinese government...”
Retreat because of retaliation?
ROFLMAO!
New York Slimes indeed!
China and Russia gave him nothing. Even with a state visit to Beijing, zero help.
The JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) was not approved by Congress through an up-or-down vote the way a treaty would be.
Instead, Congress passed the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act (INARA) in 2015, which gave Congress the right to review the agreement and pass a resolution of approval or disapproval. If Congress did nothing, the agreement could proceed.
What happened in 2015:
The Republican-controlled House voted to disapprove the JCPOA.
A majority of Senators also opposed the deal.
However, supporters of the deal had enough votes in the Senate to block a disapproval resolution from advancing, preventing Congress from stopping the agreement.
Because Congress never passed a disapproval resolution that could survive a presidential veto, the Obama administration was able to implement the JCPOA.
A key distinction is that the JCPOA was treated as an executive agreement, not a treaty. Therefore it did not require the Constitution’s treaty process of a two-thirds vote in the Senate for ratification.
