[U.K.] Teens will get social media curfew and chatbot ban

Teenagers will be banned from certain social media platforms and have their daily usage curbed under sweeping reforms to be announced by Sir Keir Starmer on Sunday.

The ban will go further than the one imposed by Australia in December by targeting technology deemed harmful to children, including chatbots and certain features on gaming apps.

Under-16s in Australia have been banned from using ten platforms: TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Twitch and Kick. It is understood that the UK will follow suit by raising the minimum age on social media to 16, from the average of 13, for the same ten sites.

Curfews for older teenagers will be introduced. Daily social media use will be restricted for 16 and 17-year-olds in a move designed to curb unhealthy late-night scrolling habits.

Buried in the article...

“Kanishka Narayan, the online safety minister, has said the government — which will also give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote”

And how exactly will they enforce this?

There’s a lot of danger on the Internet. Lots of horrible stuff. But I don’t see how such a ban could be effectively enforced. I’m guessing what we’ll see here is some large agency that’s infected with mission creep.

The solution is at the home, with parents using security software to set limits. And home and school conversations to make the dangers known to the kids.

This will be easily defeated by the kids. VPNs, etc.

Teens will find a work-around, just as they do at the high schools to get around school filters. Saw it all the time, they even brag about watching porn on school computers.

Also, there is always someone older willing to log on and give them access - just as there is for buying alcohol.

And how exactly will they enforce this?

By forcing everyone to identify themselves before logging in. You will either need to upload an image of your ID, or provide a credit card/bank account number that has already identified your age.

The UK looks like the former Eastern Europe.

And just like the 1980s, its time to kick that Neo-marxist tyranny over

By enforcing the law they already have in place. No one in Britain will be allowed to login to any site on the WWW without presenting a photo ID at time of signin along with your face.
That way, when you say anything critical of Brit gov’mt they will be able to simply put you in jail without a trial — since they have already gotten rid of jury trials.

Imagine the consternation here in the US when (according to the DNC) blacks are too stupid to get an ID.

How will they know who to vote for if they haven't had access to the internet until their birthday? All this will do is double their parents' vote.
