Knicks rally again behind Jalen Brunson’s 45 points to defeat Spurs, win franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973

The New York Knicks are NBA champions.

In a Game 5 of the NBA Finals Saturday night that looked much like the previous four, the San Antonio Spurs took a double-digit lead in the first quarter.

But like in three of the previous four games, the Knicks rallied — this time from a 16-point deficit — to secure a 94-90 Game 5 win and a 4-1 series victory in the NBA Finals.

Jalen Brunson led the way with a legacy-securing 45-point effort as New York’s only reliable source of offense on a night in which both teams struggled from the field. But for New York, the win didn’t have to be pretty. The result is the franchise’s first NBA championship since 1973. And Brunson has secured his place among New York’s sporting greats.

Good for the Knicks - they're the masters of coming from behind.

Jalen Brunson is broken up in the post-game interview. He mentions how important his work ethic was growing up.

I know we're down on a lot of sports (and NYC) these days, but this is a feel-good story for me.

Don’t like the Knicks, but Brunson is a Nova guy , so very happy for him.

Glad to see this isn’t going back to NY for a Game 6. What a nightmare it was playing games there this postseason.

I gave up on the NBA long ago, but was a nominal Laker fan.

That said, I like to see the traditional teams win it. I dislike seeing Oklahoma City and Dallas Mavericks in there. I much prefer Lakers, Knickerbockers, 76ers, and Pistons.

Obviously they weren’t able to keep the Knicks fans out of the arena.

We needed a championship here in NY. Been too long. One needs to remember that while the city itself is a cesspool, there’s a lot of NY sports fans that are very conservative. Just nice to see the Knicks finally win. Dolan on balance has been a terrible owner for both the Knicks and Rangers. I was 3 last time they won.

Growing up, Clyde Frazier was my favorite player. Hard to believe it’s been that long since the Knicks won a title.

If New York couldn’t lose, I’m glad they won quickly to cut the NBA out of a couple more games of revenue. The last thing I wanted was for them to win in seven.

Good. I'm already tired of Wemby - the guy gets away with more no-call flagrant fouls than anyone I've seen in recent history.

Brunson was amazing tonight, and while KAT and Ananoby were huge in these Finals, Brunson is the driver of that bus. To think the Mavs had both Brunson and Luka and fumbled them both away.

Congrats to the Knicks - I got to see them in the regular season at MSG. Great fan base, well deserved.

The Knicks earned it.

(And frankly, the Spurs were one of the worst "choke" teams I've seen in a while...)

Spurs played like i thought they would, young and inexperienced. Wemby is only 22 years old. That team is gonna be a problem the next 5 years.
