Tim Allen Addresses ‘Personality Problems’ Holding Up ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot
WLT Report ^ | June 13, 2026 | Russell Bartlett

Posted on 06/13/2026 6:57:48 PM PDT by Red Badger

If Roseanne proved that the left will stop at nothing to pull a sitcom star off the air over political views, Tim Allen continues to demonstrate that it’s possible to avoid that fate.

Not only has he enjoyed recent success as the lead in “Shifting Gears,” he’s also been at the center of talks about a reboot of his classic series “Home Improvement.”

That project has been stalled lately, though, and the right-leaning funnyman addressed the issue for fans who are looking forward to new episodes of the ‘90s sitcom.

As the Daily Wire reported:

“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen told Us Weekly in an interview published Wednesday.

This comment likely referred to Zachery Ty Bryan being arrested in November 2025 over a domestic violence violation after previously being arrested for suspicion of DUI, felony assault, and robbery, as the outlet noted. He was also arrested on suspicion of strangling his then-girlfriend in 2020. Bryan starred as one of Allen’s sons in the series, which began when he was 9 years old.

Another blow to any hope of a reboot is that, in 2024, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, who played another son on the show, is no longer “interested in acting,” according to his former co-star Patricia Richardson.

“They’ve got their own issues. I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly,” the actor added.

The massive hit “Home Improvement” ran for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999. Allen starred as Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, and the series followed him as he navigated life with his wife and three sons. Allen, who has a real-life love of cars, previously starred in the popular, Trump-friendly sitcom “Last Man Standing” for many years before it was shockingly canceled in 2017.

Other decades-old sitcoms, including “Frasier” and “Malcolm in the Middle,” have been rebooted in recent years with a varying number of original cast members opting to return.

Allen’s remarks about “Home Improvement” sparked some social media discussion, including some who would prefer to leave the show as it is instead of potentially ruining it with today’s Hollywood sensibilities:

The “Malcolm” reboot did receive some negative feedback for its inclusion of a trans character, as Outkick reported earlier this year:

You probably couldn’t tell from that two-minute teaser trailer, but “Malcolm in the Middle” has apparently gone just a little woke.

For starters, Stevie (Malcolm’s wheelchair-bound best friend) is a gay Ru Paul lookalike and has an adopted son with his lover.

In an attempt to placate the rest of the LGBTQ+ community, Malcolm and his brothers have a trans/non-binary sibling whom the first episode of the new series has an entire segment built around.

In it, Kelly, explains that “they” haven’t felt like a girl (since that’s Kelly’s gender at birth, apparently) since they were 5 years old, all accompanied by soft piano music to tug at the viewers’ heartstrings.

And viewers are pissed, to say the least.

“Last Man Standing” for many years before it was shockingly canceled in 2017.

He played in that show until 2021. It was dropped by ABC in 2017 but FOX picked it up for its final seasons from 2018-2021.

Or the characters can be referenced, but just not physically appear in the show. It is not like they should have to still be living at home.

,,, TV shows like HOME IMPROVEMENT in the 1990s can't be taken for granted when you see this cluster ________.

I think you’ll sadly have to axe the top photo. It’s a getty image.

I liked Home Improvement, and Last Man Standing (until they replaced Mandy).

We tried to like Shifting Gears, but it didn’t click with us. The daughter ... dreadful!

Home Improvement and Last Man Standing are basically the same show with a few differences. It’s the differences that make the show worth watching. No need to dig up Home Improvement again. Maybe give them a Christmas Special and move on to something else.

She’s supposed to ‘dreadful’ that’s the point of the whole show.

As for the replacement of ‘Mandy’ on Last Man Standing, the original actress assumed that the cancellation from ABC was permanent and had signed contracts for other projects including films, so she could not do the show, hence the replacement...........

Shifting Gears isn’t as good as the other two. Last Man Standing is the best out of the three. Home Improvement seems dated to me.

If the Frasier reboot does work (debatable), it’s because John Mahoney died and David Hyde Pierce opted out, so it’s not the same show.

Right. When the show came back Mandy/Molly had already accepted other gigs. The new one was not audacious enough — too blah.

By “dreadful”, I meant that she’s a terrible actor. Every line she says screams, “I’m ACTING”. At least Jon Lovitz was funny when he said it.
