A drone video captured near Seascape Beach in Aptos appears to show a shark circling a surfer in the water on Wednesday morning.
The video was filmed around 8:45 a.m. on June 10 by drone operator Nick Bertocchini, who posts on Instagram as @corfino_photography.
After the encounter, Bertocchini said he spoke with the surfer, identified as Rex, who said he grew up surfing in the area and has been seeing more sharks near Seascape Beach over the years.
According to Bertocchini, Rex chose to get out of the water after the encounter.
Bertocchini said he frequently spots sharks while flying his drone along the coast and has filmed many interactions between sharks and surfers. Most of the time, he said, the sharks appear curious and then continue on their way.
"This one stood out because it appeared more investigative than the average encounter I typically see. I am glad the shark and surfer left without any further contact," Bertocchini.
Shark sightings are not uncommon along the Central Coast, and beachgoers are urged to stay alert in the water and be aware of changing marine conditions.

From what little I could tell, it appeared to be about a 10-12 foot great white shark.
Just an estimate based on photos. I am not a shark expert.

Pretty accurate assessment from what I can see. It's almost certainly a GWS in those waters and the body/head/pectoral fins shape pretty much confirms it. That area is within the infamous “Red Triangle” that is noted for a higher than average number of GWS attacks.
I was just there in October. My best friend has a buddy there with a fantastic home up the hillside.

And yet, the “experts” on you tub and elsewhere claim that the most dangerous beach in the US in re: shark attacks is New Smyrna Beach, Volusia County, FL. Where tens of thousands have visited, surfed, body surfed, belly boards etc. The numbers don’t add up in regards to that claim.
But wouldn’t go swimming in the Adelaide, Mary or Dalys rivers near Darwin Northern Territory of Australia, where one can easily find huge native saltwater crocodiles who eat.. anything.
That great white turned and followed, especially after the surfer was paddling with hands, the wave rise drove the animal just deep enough to give the guy time to get away. Close call.
Used to just pull our feet and hands up top and try to not move.. but nothing this large. 12 feet likely.
