This was the number one song on my sister's 8th birthday . I sent her the link today . Thought I'd share here .

Kyu died in the JAL crash in August 1985 ( I moved to Japan the following month ) . The crash is the deadliest single aircraft accident in aviation history . 520 died .

Kyu means 9 in Japanese . He was the youngest of 9 kids in his family . hence Kyu was his nickname .

Leave it to record execs to re-name the song Sukiyaki . It has nothing to do with food hehe !

Lordy, yes...I remember. Listened to that and all the hits on my trusty Sears Silvertone transistor radio...

Odder still,
The song was song by Kyu Sakamoto, written by lyricist Rokusuke Ei and composer Hachidai Nakamura.
In Japanese,
Roku is 6
Hachi is 8
Kyu is 9
6,8,9 has a minor, mythical ring in Japan. Sort of like
‘Paul is dead’.

I remember that song. My dad was posted at Ft Ord in California. That’s in the middle part of the Western facing C, where the south side is Monterrey, and Santa Cruz is the north side. I was in 4th or 5th gradeat the army base there. Like everyone else, I listened to the tune on a Japanese transistor radio. The radio station had a jingle that ended in Cannery Row. Wonderful times. Telstar was another one like this one.

I knew what the song was going to be just by reading the title, I remember it well. I had recently turned eight too. The song was part of the old world, the world as it was before November 22 ushered in a new, unpleasant future.

I remember it - I was almost 11 and would ride my bike with a transistor radio tied to the handlebar and listen to tunes.

Just weeks after November 22 I wanna hold your hand and she loves you hit the airwaves. That was part of the new world for good or ill. I liked that too at the time. I was about to turn 14.

An oldies station I used to listen to would annoyingly cut the song off during his whistling at the end.

I was born in 1963, but I always loved this song. There was a remake of it in the 90’s that I sang to my young son at bedtime. He still brings it up from time to time.
