HOUSTON (CW39) — The internet’s favorite international tourist is officially making his way to Houston, and Texans legend J.J. Watt is already stepping up to roll out the welcome mat.

A German soccer fan known online as “Freddy the German” has gone wildly viral for documenting his 2026 World Cup road trip across the American South, and his latest stop is bringing him right to the Bayou City.

What to know

Freddy (@FreddyLA7) has gained a massive following documenting his six-week World Cup road trip on X (formerly Twitter).

He recently went viral for his hilariously positive reactions to Southern staples like Buc-ee’s and Waffle House.

Ahead of his arrival in Houston, J.J. Watt reached out online to offer his help navigating the city. What’s happening now

Freddy and his friends arrived in the U.S. with a dream of following Germany’s World Cup run. As they’ve traveled through states like Georgia and Tennessee, Freddy has been posting his awe-struck reactions to everyday American sights.

His wide-eyed discovery of a massive Buc-ee’s gas station quickly made him a social media sensation, with major sports outlets and millions of users following his every move.

Why this matters

Houston is about to be on the global stage as it hosts multiple FIFA World Cup matches. Freddy’s journey highlights the massive influx of international tourists who will be experiencing Texas culture, food, and hospitality for the very first time.

For locals, seeing our everyday norms through the eyes of a bewildered but enthusiastic European tourist has become elite internet entertainment.

What people are saying

As Freddy posted his route map heading toward Houston and asked for recommendations, the responses flooded in.

But one reply stood out above the rest. Former Houston Texans star J.J. Watt quote-tweeted Freddy’s route, saying, “I got you covered in Houston big dog.”

Freddy quickly replied, “Appreciate it. You’re the man, let’s do this. 😊”.

What happens next

Freddy is expected to arrive in Houston soon. Locals are already flooding his comments, demanding that he try authentic Tex-Mex and Texas BBQ. If J.J. Watt is truly curating his itinerary, Freddy is in for a legendary Houston experience.

Everyone badmouthing soccer fails to understand the boost in economic and cultural morale the World Cup is offering states and local businesses!

I’m guessing the Fifth Ward will not be a part of the itinerary...

Oh, boy. Wait till he finds out there’s no wienerschnitzel at Weinerschnitzel’s. Things could turn ugly.

Freddy The German seems to be hiding his face and his Buddies faces on X. Too bad he thinks that is necessary while touring the USA.

I thought the guy was from Scotland and he and his crew drank the flight dry of beer and had to resort to drinking wine?

Amen! I don't watch soccer very often but I work at a sports bar in Northern Commiefornia and we had our busiest Thursday night in quite a while last night.

Normally, the only people who ask us to turn one of the TVs to a soccer game are Mexicanny looking customers but last night there were people of all colors interested in the Korea vs Czech Republic match.

Plus, I learned a couple of fascinating things about soccer talking to some customers. For instance, soccer teams have coaches. And, they run "plays". So they're not out there just running around willy-nilly hoping for the ball to go into the net.

I'm off tonight but I might go in to watch the USA vs Paraguay game just for the atmosphere.

If it’s anything like around me (S.E. Michigan), it’s a great time to go to the bar and watch the USA games.

I love his reaction to Buc-ee's.

Ngl riding the metro in Atlanta is a bit scary. If any of you guys are going to a game there, I’d probably recommend getting an Uber instead.

I played soccer and even the refs don’t fully understand the rules. I was playing fullback and a guy raced by us with the ball and I pointed at him. They called him for offsides. He wasn’t offsides.

I think they only call offsides when someone scores a goal.
