More likely they didn't want to be a statistic in black-on-black violent crimes.
It was also a convenient excuse to beg off jury duty on a murder trial.
What I read was that they were educators. The murder occurred at an interscholastic track meet. Therefore, they were removed from the jury pool because of the adjacency of their jobs to the scene.
However, they may also have stated that they could not convict a black student, or could not disregard their own prejudices in arriving at a verdict.
I’m not saying you’re opinion is incorrect, but pointing out the publicized reason for them being removed from the jury pool.
