The biggest World Cup tournament in history has arrived in North America, and soccer fans across the globe are buzzing with excitement for the opening matches and star-studded ceremonies on Thursday and Friday.
From Mexico City to New York to Toronto, millions of spectators draped in their country's colors will gather to watch as 48 national soccer teams compete at the 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup. It's the first time the tournament will use the newly expanded field, up from the previous 32-team format that had been in place since 1998.

Saw on Newsmax where a poll of US citizens revealed that 45% of Americans could give a care less about the World Cup.
Once upon a time there were no substitutions allowed in soccer.
Then it was 1, then 2, then 3........
Frankly, I would rather have it where if the games go to Extra Time, you can freely swap in players. To me that’s much better than having Penalty Kicks.
That’s what I love about the NHL playoffs, is they play until someone scores, but then again hockey players’ shifts are only about a minute.
And non-called fouls.
You’re probably right. It’s still tougher than the NBA where the average is 16-18 minutes per half.
Perhaps a penalty box like hockey and lacrosse would make the game more interesting by making the power-play team more aggressive. Also, penalize for stalling like NCAA wrestling (i.e., playing not to loose as opposed to playing to win)
A man advantage in soccer won’t make much difference if the team is only short-handed for a few minutes.
Yeah, but the gripping scenes of grown men rolling around on the ground pretending to be grievously injured, when no one came within 2’ of them, makes it all worthwhile.
Which tells you how much more physically demanding ice hockey is, compared to soccer, and every other major sport.
The only reason to watch soccer is for the drama injuries.
Like watching NASCAR for the wrecks.
Yes, they roll around like women in a jello bar. LOL
There is more action in a fish tank than there is in soccer. And men cannot entertain by whipping off their tops like Brandy Chastain.
