This article is wrong-headed. There was an Islamic Golden Age. It did produce advances in science and technology at a time when the West was in the Dark Ages. There have been volumes written by serious scholars - both liberal and conservative - about it. This article is superficial and silly. We can acknowledge that Islam went through a period of learning and advancement at the same time that we criticize the problems with Islam.

Medieval Muslims get credit for many things that they never created. It's true that Muslim scholars (mostly Persians, not Arabs) kept "alive" the texts of the ancient Greeks and Romans, as well as transmitting innovations from India such as the base 10 decimal system - i.e. "Arab numerals" are actually Indian. But these are achievements of preservation and transmission, not innovation.
The best that can be said about Muslims in Medieval times is that they didn't go out of their way to destroy the works of "infidels" as Muslims do today, mainly because they were in a position of military and political strength rather than weakness in their homelands and some of the lands they conquered (i.e. destroying the works of other cultures is a sign of insecurity and weakness, not strength).
