Paul McCartney Hopes to Record a Posthumous Prince Duet

Paul McCartney has an idea for a posthumous collaboration with Prince.

During a recent appearance on BBC Radio 2’s Tracks of My Years, the Beatles legend shared high praise for the Purple One, specifically naming his 1986 single “Kiss” as a favorite.

“He took a lot from Hendrix, but he was a great player,” McCartney noted of Prince’s guitar playing on the tune. “It’s just so simple, again to pull that kind of thing off, you can do a kind of simple thing, and it can just sound simple but not great, but his sounds simply great. He’s a wizard.”

McCartney then shared an unexpected anecdote.

“I was with some guy, a couple of years ago so it was after Prince had died, and he said, ‘Have you heard Prince do ‘Long and Winding Road’? I said, ‘Well no, that’s one of my songs, I don’t think he ever did it.’”

Prince's History With 'The Long and Winding Road'

According to setlist.fm, Prince covered “The Long and Winding Road” in concert 12 times, most of which took place during his 2007 residency at Club 3121 in Las Vegas. McCartney was evidently unaware of the renditions, and was surprised when he was sent a recording of Prince’s version.

Listening to the recording, McCartney noticed Prince made the song "kind of rocky" with "some really good guitar on it." Hearing another rock icon reinterpret the Beatles classic got the creative wheels turning in Macca's head. “It’s really great, so I’m going to ask them [for permission to use it]. Because I could make it into something really good.”

If Sir Paul gets his wish, a McCartney-Prince duet may see the light of day. If it comes anywhere close to the Purple One’s famous rendition of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” fans will have plenty to be excited about.

He has two multiweek no. 1 hits with “black guys.” And a #2 I guess.

"Posthumous duets are just creepy, period."

In general I agree, but I would make an exception for Natalie Cole's "Unforgettable," with her father. It has a heavy, haunting nostalgia that's profoundly....unforgettable.

That is true. Yet still, on a couple of tracks (especially the opener) he’s still doing the classic hard rock growl that he’s been doing since “She’s a Woman.”

But it’s higher pitched and strained now sadly. The last time he really belted out the classic McCartney growl was probably on the “Egypt Station” album, especially the latter part of “Come on to Me”. Just a magnificent vocal performance, and at 76 years old, I believe. In fact, the first 6 songs in Egypt Station might be the best six-song lineup from any of his works. And that’s saying a lot!

But the gentle songs he can still sing somewhat well, though he’s often going to a higher register. The song “First Star of the Morning” is very pretty and has some extremely interesting guitar work. I say that because it’s the only song since 2008 that has a sound reminiscent of the ultimate masterpiece: The Fireman Electric Arguments. That’s my desert island album: if I can bring only one album with me, it’s that one. Intense, haunting, beautiful, and zero pop appeal.

“Momma Gets By” is another standout. The emotion behind it is sublime, and yes that’s George Martin’s son, Giles, with the orchestral arrangement.

But yes, Paul’s voice is in serious decline, but he can still pull off some nice work.

But that said, I’m glad he didn’t go the route of using AI to “normalize” his voice.

I don’t think he ever would. And his producers (from his last three albums) like his voice rough. It’s authentic, they say. And they’re right, I’m thinking.

“Posthumous” just for Prince or for McCartney too?

Heh, a short sci-fi story titled "Rubber Soul" (by Spider Robinson, IIRC) comes to mind. I remember reading it in one of those Omni Magazine fiction compendium issues back in the 1980s.

I saw an interview with Miles Davis, and Miles was asked who he thought was the best up-and-coming musician. He said Prince.

The words I would use for Kenny G are not allowed here.

Prince was a musical and business genius. If only he had faithful doctors.

Agreed. I seem to recall Natalie Cole did one with her father Nat King many years ago.
