Paul McCartney: McCartney: Taylor Swift is as big as the Beatles
The Telegraph UK ^ | 25 May 2026 | Robert White

Sir Paul McCartney has finally named an artist he would rank alongside his former band – pop queen Taylor Swift.

In an interview with BBC Radio 2’s Tracks Of My Years, the 83-year-old music veteran expressed his admiration for the American pop singer, describing her as “clever” and a “very good” performer...

He said: “You do see the parallel of the amount of fame and the worldwide fame that Taylor Swift has and that we had [as the Beatles]…

But Swift questioned comparisons with the Beatles during an interview in December.

Stephen Colbert, the host of The Late Show, suggested that the reception to her must have been similar to the rock band, to which she responded: “I don’t know, I think they had a whole thing going.”

God has a book that is at the top of the best seller list. It's been that way for centuries.

Except I don’t know a single Taylor Swift song.

Same here. I know I heard one - daughter in Law played one when said I never heard one. Most modern female musicians all sound the same

I was disappointed at the Country Music Hall of Fame last year when I went to it having a whole part of a floor dedicated to this harpy. I blistered them in my review, not that they care. She sang a couple “country songs” when she first started and they sucked. Her cuck boyfriend is nauseating as well.

‘Big’ is a bit of a wiggle word. Yes, she has a large audience. No, she is not as good as the Beatles.

“I don’t know a single Taylor Swift song.”

Unlike James Comey who is Swift’s biggest fan, and knows all of her songs. He said so. Nothing wrong with him, right?

Go ahead Paul.....say she’s more popular than Jesus and see what happens......again.

Actually that was John Lennon and he wasn't wrong. He was referring to how popular the Beatles were in the Far East, India and the Middle East. He was talking fan appeal only and he clarified that more than once. When he said that, some people here were still miffed because the Beatles refused to play to segregated audiences

A lot of her hit songs were about what jerks her exes were and making fun of them. So right there is a limiting factor she appealed to immature teenage girls, the Beatles music appealed to everyone.

She did become a worldwide phenomenon and the question would be can that in any way equal The Beatles not in quality of music but in terms of her being a sensation and remaining a sensation for an extended period of time.

She definitely became a very big deal, but having lived through the Beatles era my basic answer is no she does not compare certainly not as an artist and not even as a pop phenomenon.

She’s also the last white pop star left.

You folks are mistaken. Paul is dead.

Have you ever listened to a Wings album?

Sad thing is that was a time when Christianity meant a lot to a lot more people. Even a slightly blasphemous mention of Jesus was considered a scandal.

Paul McCartney: McCartney: Taylor Swift is as big as the Beatles.

Paul, you're delusional if you believe this. She's somewhat popular today but doesn't approach the popularity of the Beetles in their prime or after their prime. How 'popular' will she be: 10 years from now? 20 years from now? 30 years from now? 40 years from now? 50 years from now? It won't compare to that of the Beetles.

He is referring to fame, not talent.

We are in the age of influencer fame. We know these people, but many of us are not quite sure what they are famous for. Examples: Jake Paul, Mr. Beast, Tay, Kardashian, etc.

She’s like Zamphir, Master of the pan flute. She’s sold more records than Elvis and the Beatles combined!

Except I don’t know a single Taylor Swift song.

Music dispersion is much different today. There are no "singles" being played incessantly on radio stations every teen+ is listening to, and therefore bought on 45s.

Also, the more crossable Beatles songs, particularly from Rubber Soul onward, were covered by numerous performers so that the music was being heard in numerous pop genres, something Swift does not allow. This means that Swift music is listened to primarily by Swifties, who comprise a vast horde that no man can number, but are also a semi-closed club that blocks the rest of us.

Bingo. Meanwhile, there are Beatles songs that will likely remain in the songbook for centuries.
