Gingrich: Clinton Impeachment Over Lewinsky Scandal 'Was a Mistake'
Newsmax ^

Posted on 05/27/2026 7:43:38 AM PDT by DIRTYSECRET

Gingrich said the impeachment of Bill Clinton argued that the proceedings became overly focused on sex instead of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Gingrich said the effort was undermined because it became publicly associated with Monica Lewinsky rather than the broader legal issues surrounding sworn testimony in the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit.

Ken Starr's investigation later expanded to include allegations surrounding Clinton's relationship with Lewinsky and testimony tied to the Paula Jones lawsuit.

The findings led House Republicans to impeach Clinton making him the second president in U.S. history to be impeached.

"Is he allowed to commit felonies?'" Gingrich said. But by allowing it to be about sex, it trivialized it."

And it turns out the Clintons had absolutely nothing to worry about either with Trump in office. Sorry, Bill, it was all a mistake.

They should’ve impeached him for the real reason... treason.

giving nuclear secrets, and more, to the chinese.

it was called ‘ChinaGate’ back in the day.

look up the Cox congressional report for everything the clintons gave the chinese

no, the chinese did not ‘steal’ it... they were escorted thru the labs and handed the info.

biden was worse...

Attempting to impeach Clinton over the Monica Lewinsky affair not only failed to remove him from office, it actually shored up public sympathy and support for him. He was accused of lying about a private sexual matter that involved a woman above the age of consent. Like it or not, most people don't think that someone's sex life, unless it involves rape, pedophilia etc is the business of Congress or law enforcement, and any attempt at this kind of prying inevitably causes a backlash.

Had they got Clinton for Whitewater or the myriad other legal and financial accusations against him and Hillary, that would have been a different matter.

“I thought Newsmax was better than this.”

Newsmax pledged $1 million to Clinton foundation. How anyone can take them seriously after that surprises me.

**Just in time to take away from the massive wins MAGA is having at the polls. Why is Gingrich such a publicity hound?**
Perhaps he’s reminding us to not get too cocky.

**They should’ve impeached him for the real reason... treason-giving nuclear secrets, and more, to the Chinese.**
Loral gave them the ability to move ahead 25 years with the technology. The ‘who cares?’ attitude set up Biden not doing his job regarding the border.

He never says the impeachment was a mistake. He said it was a mistake to let people think it was over Lewinski.

I thought Newsmax was better than this.

~~~
I agree.
The headline does not match the message.
Gingrich is right on all counts.
I remember hearing back then (from democrat sympathizers of course) that it’s stupid to be impeached over sex. Which was a misnomer, because he wasn’t just cheating on the first lady, but he was exploiting a young woman under him, which is something you would thing nearly everyone but particularly feminists would abhor, so not only was it not about sex, but it was about lies, perjury and coverup. Crimes.
So just like today, 3 or 4 decades ago, everyone was in politically tribal.
Do I think Bill Clinton commit major crimes and misdemeanors against the state to the level of needing a huge impeachment over what was basically just a tabloid scandal? For This case, No. Personally I don’t.
Just like I don’t think the FBI/DOJ and the ever so honorable Capitol should have have been weaponized to attack Trump. Even less so.
But look at how many crimes against the State and the trust of the people have escaped scrutiny over those same decades! Real crimes!
Now being impeached is a “Badge of Honor”.
The operative word in your statement is “was”.
Did Bill Clinton commit a felony? If you commit a felony, will you be merely censured?
Sometimes we have to go through the motions of justice, even if it realistically can't be achieved.
I think you’re overstating the impact of that impeachment saga. What’s probably most comical is that those Marxist hacks even thought Clinton was worth defending in the first place. More details to follow in my response to another poster on this thread.
Momentum toward what? Did the GOP fail to achieve any political objectives as a result? I don’t think so.
By 1998 Clinton had already been re-elected. He signed most of Newt Gingrich’s “Contract With America” into law.
Clinton was such a feeble President that his own VP lost the election to determine his successor.
Who the hell cares? It was 30 years ago.
Sorry Newt, your biggest mistake was sitting next to Pelosi “working together to solve climate change.”
Sucker!
The sleight of hand was going after him for his sex life, while ignoring his overall corruption and his ties to the Chinese.
Whenever anyone would bring up those issues, they would tell us, it’s under investigation by DOJ, we can’t talk about it. Then when GW took office and people asked about it, GW just said, we have to move on. So all that was buried. I always said, because the Bush family and Clinton were joined at the hip.
John Glenn’s Space Shuttle ride was a reward for saving Clinton from conviction in the Senate.
Not really. If Newtster hadn’t caved in the 1994 budget battle, he would have had the popular support to ditch Clinton.
Newt was the problem.
