A man on trial for killing a first-year university student has denied a charge of manslaughter.

Vickrum Digwa is accused at Southampton Crown Court of the murder of 18-year-old Henry Nowak, from Chafford Hundred, Essex, in Belmont Road, Southampton, on December 3 2025.

The 23-year-old is also charged with carrying a knife in public and his mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, is accused of assisting an offender by removing a weapon from the scene.

The court has heard that Digwa was carrying a kirpan – a religious knife – with a 21cm blade which the prosecution says caused five stab wounds to Mr Nowak, including two to the back of his legs and a fatal wound to the chest.

The judge, William Mousley KC, told the jury that he had ordered Digwa to face a charge of manslaughter as an alternative to the murder charge.

The defendant then pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The judge has instructed the jury to consider manslaughter NOT murder...

'Judge William Mousley KC told jurors that he had also instructed the jury to consider a manslaughter charge as an alternative to murder. Explaining this, the judge said that if a person did not intentionally cause the fatal injury or did not intend to kill or cause serious harm, then they would not be guilty of murder. His mother, Kiran Kaur, 53, was also charged with assisting an offender by allegedly removing the weapon from the scene; she denied the allegation. The trial continues as of May 2026'

This is despite being stabbed/slashed on the back of his legs by the accused as he tried to escape. Hmm.

The trial continues.

The jury should merely override the judge. It was murder.

The Stranger within my gate,
He may be true or kind,
But he does not talk my talk—
  I cannot feel his mind.
I see the face and the eyes and the mouth,
   But not the soul behind.

The men of my own stock
They may do ill or well,
But they tell the lies I am wonted to,
They are used to the lies I tell.
And we do not need interpreters
When we go to buy and sell.

The Stranger within my gates,
He may be evil or good,
But I cannot tell what powers control—
  What reasons sway his mood;
Nor when the Gods of his far-off land
  Shall repossess his blood.

The men of my own stock,
   Bitter bad they may be,
But, at least, they hear the things I hear,
  And see the things I see;
And whatever I think of them and their likes
They think of the likes of me.

This was my father's belief
   And this is also mine:
Let the corn be all one sheaf—
And the grapes be all one vine,
Ere our children's teeth are set on edge
  By bitter bread and wine.

— Rudyard Kipling

‘ith a 21cm blade which the prosecution says caused five stab wounds.”
Amazing, the “blade” caused the wounds, not the man stabbing Kowak with the blade.

Basil the Great
@BasilTheGreat

JUDGE REDUCES HENRY NOWAK MURDER TO MANSLAUGHTER

This is judge William Mousley KC

He has ordered that Vickrum Digwa face a MANSLAUGHTER charge INSTEAD of MURDER despite stabbing Henry Nowak in the back of the legs as he tried to escape

Absolutely horrific

“If a person may not have deliberately have caused the fatal injury or may not have intended to kill or cause reasonably serious harm, he or she is not guilty of murder”
So I guess he accidentally stabbed him FIVE times?
Left leaning soft on crime judges is a work wide scourge we must get rid of!

There’s a very good reason why Nowak’s Snapchat and the bodycam footage haven’t been made public.

First thought is the judge is a two-tier a-hole. Second thought is I wonder what the typical charge is for a homicide that happens during a somewhat random street altercation like this.

If it’s typically manslaughter, then murder may be overcharging. If that’s the case, then it seems possible the judge is actually increasing the chances of a guilty verdict by putting a lesser charge on the table.

I don’t think there is any doubt that it was murder. It just wasn’t murder by a MAGA.

Copilot says the typical charge in a random confrontation between strangers is manslaughter, not murder, because murder requires premeditation.

Damned knife!

Jumped up and "caused five stab wounds."

The UK needs knife control!

Wait! What?

Oh.

Never mind.

Wonderful post. Thank you for recalling that poem.

It has occurred to me that Kipling, a Nobelist, would today be vilified and maybe indicted for hate speech for the same works.

That is how far we have fallen as guardians of our freedoms, which others, not we, suffered and died to secure for us.

Of course freedoms were initially and forever given by the Almighty.

But securing them in a hostile world is still a task left to us. Lately we haven't been doing our jobs.

I think the additional wounds to the back of the Nowak’s legs (as he tried to flee after the fatal wound) are indicators that it was Digwa’s intent to kill or cause serious harm to him.
