Will the Swiss Cap Their Population?
YouTube ^ | 14 May 2026 | Peter Zeihan

On June 14, Switzerland will vote on a referendum to cap its population at 10 million. Current projections don't put the Swiss population crossing that number until 2035 or 2040.

The Swiss very, very, very jealously guard the right to have citizenship, and are notoriously strict about it. So if you are from elsewhere and you want to become Swiss, it's a very long, long, long process.

Somebody is thinking about immigration, and surprisingly allowing the citizens to vote on it.

In 1970 the U.S. population was around 200 million, now it’s about 330 million or so. Most of the growth is due to immigration.

I grew up in a USA with 150 million. An extra 190 million have sure made it a crowded place. We split time between Silicon Valley and the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho area. Both places are booming and construction is everywhere. Charming little towns and ag land are getting ruined all over the place.

Yes, all over. Farmland, pasture and wilderness are being gobbled up.

My sister and BIL did a five month driving tour last summer from Maryland to visit us in Idaho, down to Arizona & New Mexico, up to see their daughter in Denver, BIL’s brother in OK, and back home. She reported seeing construction everywhere. Plus, people have money to travel and everything was packed. They live in Lancaster County, PA now and she reports construction everywhere around Littitz.

Once the population is capped the population gets older without the 2.1 children per female. Perhaps some day there will be no need for grunts.

About 1/3rd of Switzerland’s population are “migrants”. Guarding citizenship means nothing if you let in hordes of Muslim and African rapefugees.

TRUE. Over time they’ll control the government and laugh as they uncap it and eliminate you.

There was a construction boom in the Lititz area after the 2008 financial panic. My sense was that a lot of landowners simply capitulated to the developers. I used to live just north of Lititz for about 6 years beginning in the mid-80’s. That area changed a lot.

We need to cap the immigration to 0.05% of last year’s immigration. Americans should have a tax break for big families.

My folks lived in Downingtown for close to 40 years. When she got old, my mom always enjoyed slow Sunday driving cruises through the Amish country and eating at Shady Maple..

So if you are from elsewhere and you want to become Swiss,

I'm don't. When I visited France and Switzerland, I found the stories of the French being rude and difficult to not be true, at least for my visit, but it was true for the Swiss. Not to mention very expensive.

Ahhh... Shady Maple.

When I lived in Brickerville it was maybe 15 minutes to get down to Rt.30. I knew it was time to get out when that time doubled 6 years later. Furnace Hill Road (Rt. 501) was becoming a drag.
