Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) unveiled legislation Wednesday aiming to ban foreign-born US citizens from serving in Congress and other high levels of the federal government.
The South Carolina congresswoman singled out Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Shri Thanedar (D-Ill.) and Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) in announcing her joint resolution to add an amendment to the US Constitution that would prohibit naturalized US citizens from becoming federal judges, holding Senate-confirmed positions or serving in the House or Senate.
“All born in foreign countries, none were citizens by birth. All sitting in the United States Congress. All making clear every single day their loyalty is not to America,” Mace said of the trio of Democratic reps.
Mace noted the proposed amendment would impose the “very same standard the President and Vice President are already required to meet” on lawmakers and top government officials.
“The people writing America’s laws, confirming America’s judges, and representing America on the world stage should have one loyalty: America. Not any other country,” she argued.
“For too long we have allowed foreign born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America last, not America first,” Mace added. “We see it every day.
“This constitutional amendment will put an end to it.”
Twenty-six House members, including 19 Democrats and seven Republicans, were born outside of the US.
In the upper chamber, six senators – four Democrats and two Republicans – were born outside the US.

Hate to see nancy go just when she was doing so good
I would think dual citizenship would normally come through a parent via birth and the constitution(s) of the parents’ countries.
And that is why she is proposing a Constitutional Amendment, as stated in the article.
Hah!!!
Being BORN here, of citizen parents, doesn't magically give you patriotism.
The headline is poorly worded because the article itself says they are looking to pass a constitutional amendment, not just “legislation”. And obviously, a constitutional amendment is always constitutional.
“At this point, anyone not born on US soil should have their citizenship revoked and be sent packing.”
I’d have no problem with applying this rule to the odious Elon Musk, although a lot of Republican candidates would miss having his money.
But it seems a little harsh to deport the First Lady of the United States.
Or ANY governmental post.
Weak argument.
We have rules, both constitutional and statutory, which Mace now wants to change.
Those rules make native born and naturalized citizens equal.
The only exception is a Constitutional rule regarding the Presidency.
Just how many naturalized citizens do you and the too many zenophobes here on FreeRepublic actually know?
My dad got off the boat from Naples at age 10 and in a few years with the ink still wet on his citizenship papers went back to lose his right lung and seven ribs in the Argonne Forest.
You’re native born - what sacrifices have you made for America?
” I suppose Congress could pass legislation defining natural born citizenship”
Section 5 of the 14A grants and reserves this power to Congress.
100% even more important than Congress
Right, the easiest and best thing is NO MORE IMMIGRATION FOR 100 YEARS PERIOD!
Heavy lift
No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.
They already let zero slide and keep his job as Prezzy
“Service guarantees Citizenship”
It’s actually much easier than you are suggesting.
This is part of the oath of citizenship that all naturalized citizens swear to...
“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen”
Based on this oath, Omar, Pramill and Thanedar should not only be prevented from serving in Congress, they should be de-naturalized and deported (along with millions of others).
The problem is that if we were to apply this standard evenly, it would endanger the citizenship of immigrants who hold fidelity to our greatest ally. This is why they would never simply enforce the law already on the books.
hear hear!
‘banning naturalized’ and foriegn ‘citizens serving as federal judges’
