The Lion and Sun motif began appearing in Persia around the 12th–13th centuries. The Lion and Sun emblem started appearing on Persian state flags during the Safavid dynasty in the 1500s–1600s. By the Qajar dynasty (1789–1925), the Lion and Sun flag had become the recognized national flag of Persia/Iran. The standardized Pahlavi-era version was used from the 1920s until 1979.

Wrong. The Shah had been the monarch of Iran since 1941. He never abdicated and was never overthrown until the Islamist took over in 1979. Pahlavi had the constitutional authority to remove Mosaddegh from office. By the time he did, most of Iran was completely against the Prime Minister.
