Burnham allowed to run in special election as pressure on Starmer continues

SUMMARY:

Prime Minister Keir Starmer continues to face pressure from Labour MPs to either resign or set a timeline for his departure following heavy losses in elections earlier this month

Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) have said Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham will be allowed to run in the Makerfield by-election if he's selected as the party's candidate

A vacancy in the north-west England seat opened up after Labour MP Josh Simons resigned, saying it would give Burnham the chance to return to Westminster

Also this week, Wes Streeting resigned as health secretary - potentially paving the way for a leadership bid. His allies say he has the support of the 81 Labour MPs needed to enter a race

Both Streeting and Burnham are seen as a threat to Starmer's leadership, but a challenge has not yet been triggered

Thank you very much and God bless you.

The super delegates/party insiders in Labour have cleared the way for Burnham to run in that district.

It's by no means a slam dunk. Reform will fight tooth and nail and throw everything at it.

Burnham will have to earn the seat. It's going to be fascinating!

It could take place around mid- June.

I’ve been busy not had time to Freep much plus good to have a break now and then

For those wondering about my views on his election next week:

It’ll be close as they have spent over 12 million dollars making it the most expensive House primary in US history. Massie will be hoping the younger voters turn out in a May primary but that is not guaranteed.

Also, we have no idea what kind of operation they’re running or how active they are in the district (his opponents?) so really hard to say.
