Last Republican US Senator to Lose a Primary: Richard Lugar, 2012

Posted on 05/15/2026 4:38:49 PM PDT by cotton1706

After Mike Lee defeated Bob Bennett in Utah in 2010 and then Richard Lugar was defeated in 2012, Mitch McConnell was pissed.

He thereafter ensured that EVERY Republican incumbent, no matter how awful, was to be protected from removal by fellow Republican.

McConnell and the NRSC would choose which Republicans sat in the Senate, not the infernal people.

Republican senators could either leave the Senate on their own, or be defeated by a Democrat. Those were the ONLY two options.

For fourteen years, in cycle after cycle, not a single Republican incumbent has been defeated in a primary.

This month however...

With Mitch McConnell now a doddering vegetable, incumbent awful Senators Cassidy and Cornyn are expected to lose their primaries and be REMOVED from the US Senate bodily.

It begins tomorrow.

Counting on the good people of TX & LA to do the right thing. Also, this whole article just reinforces the fact that the 17th Amendment is among the most infernal damage done to our republic.

Good luck! I've found over the past 7+ years that native Texans have a death wish for the state that spills over into the voting booth.

I still shake my head that in the 2018 Texas Senate race, Beto won with native Texans 51-48%, while Cruz won with transplant Texans 57-42%.

Sounds like Florida. Transplants are more conservative than natives.

Thank you for the well written reminder regarding how few GOP Senators have been primaried out.

Let’s have a two-fer in 2026!!!!!!

We have far too many squishy RINOs in the Senate.

Yes, and the GOPe that runs Indiana, for the most part, sabotages every person that runs against the GOPe candidates.

Hopefully Lindsey Graham will lose as well.

Tillis “retired” because he knew he would lose a primary.

McConnell being upset is indeed correct but all of the rest of it is false. The NRSC is the National Republican Senatorial Committee - that “Committee” is the incumbent Republican US Senators. They have always supported their own members, long before the 2012 incident.

Two culprits to consider for bad candidate wins in ANY election...
National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC)
National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC)

Should be no senatorial primaries!

Repeal the 17th Amendment!
Let the state legislatures Puck the Senators as Founding Fathers intended. They really couldn’t do worse!

I don’t disagree with that...we’d have at least 56 Senators with that scenario.

You are correct. Which is why Cornyn funded Murkowski, and Scott endorsed Murkowski, and Rand Paul endorsed McConnell, and Richard Lugar endorsed his buddy Sam Nunn’s daughter (though a Democrat) and John Warner endorsed Mark Warner (though a Democrat), and on and on.

Also 2010:

Joe Miller defeated Lisa Murkowski in the primaries but she reentered the race as an Independent and won in the general election.

Correction: Republican Lisa Murkowski won as a write-in candidate.

That’s correct, and John Cornyn and Mitch McConnell funded HER campaign instead of the Republican, because she was an incumbent and daughter of an old Senate buddy.

Upon victory, she should’ve been removed from all committees. You want to be an independent, be an independent. But no, she was celebrated and rewarded for taking out an interloper who defeated a precious incumbent.
