Natural grass playing surface installed in AT&T Stadium ahead of FIFA World Cup

The grass is real in AT&T Stadium, well, at least for the next two months.

Renamed “Dallas Stadium” for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the artificial surface at the home of the Dallas Cowboys was replaced with a Kentucky bluegrass and rye blend grown in Colorado. The North Texas FWC Organizing Committee held a press conference on Thursday to showcase the pitch ahead of June 14, when the Netherlands and Japan clash in the first group stage match in Arlington.

FIFA requires its international tournaments be played on natural grass

Tod Martin, AT&T Stadium’s general manager, said since a soccer field is wider than a football field, some lower-level suites and seats had to be removed to allow players enough space for corner kicks and for team benches on the sidelines.

Austin preps for World Cup fever this summer FIFA sponsored a five-year sports turf research initiative with the University of Tennessee and Michigan State University to help develop the grass.

NRG Stadium in Houston, renamed “Houston Stadium” for the event, is undergoing a similar process. It will host seven matches.

Every stadium with corporate naming rights that hosts matches has been renamed to its location due to FIFA’s advertising rules that protect their official partners.

Talk about a waste. Utterly stupid. The amount we spend on sports in this country has become ludicrous.

I hope this event tanks, but alas millions will watch it and spend lots of money to attend and buy the swag junk.

If I was AT&T I would pull our name permanently if it's not good enough to be up for the foreigners.

While I am at it the move to play NFL games overseas is stupid.

The green dildos won’t bounce as well as they do on astroturf.

You don’t grasp the reality.

Bread and Circuses. The masses must have both to remain civilized.

Football and Soccer are ritual war. Thus the masses can fight their neighbors on the playing fields rather than the battlefields.

Football is the glue holding nations together

BS. It’s a game and a diversion from reality.

Soccer players had to pay somebody else to do landscaping? The irony is almost painful.

“FIFA requires its international tournaments be played on natural grass”

The NFL players would prefer if it was grass when they played on it but artificial turf is cheaper for the owners to maintain so turf it is.

The cost of the grass and it’s upkeep are a fraction of what Jerry is going to make in vendor sales, parking and the cut of the ticket prices.

FIFA is big money. 6 billion people are football fanatics regardless of what boomer Americans think it is the world sport. If Jerry makes less than ten million net per game it will be a shock he is set to make 100 million over the 9 games. That grass could be watered with bottled water and still be in the black. It’s a rounding error in the opex for the matches.

“ Bread and Circuses. The masses must have both to remain civilized.

Justinian knew how to deal with sports hooliganism. See the Nika riots in Wiki:

“ Then, the troops led by Belisarius, Mundus, and Constantiolus stormed into the Hippodrome, with Belisarius capturing Hypatius and Pompeius while Mundus killed any remaining people indiscriminately, whether they were Blues or Greens.[10][9]

Aftermath

According to the account of Procopius, around 30,000 people were killed, although many likely died as result of trampling in the chaos of the riot rather than at the hands of the soldiers.[1][14]”

World sport... Just another money grab on the stupid or uneducated. The best quote I ever heard about pro sports is, “when they pay to watch me work, I will pay to watch them”.

The only true pro sports are those where the participants make a minimum (or nothing) and only get paid more based on winning. Pro sports are sports they are a business. Would you pay to watch the check-out girl at the local mart, workers building a house, engineers doing problem solving, pickers in the field...?

The same for the old days of minstrels or entertainers. They were paid by the villagers where they performed, usually with room and board and stipends. Now they are guaranteed millions just to show up. Kind of like Congress if you count their illegal trading and kick-backs.

World Cup is not going to tank. But ... these games should be at the Cotton Bowl. Much better soccer venue than Jerryworld.

The cost isn’t the point it is the waste of resources for a game. Grass, fuel to move the grass, the electricity to power the special lights... for a game.

He is, in fact, spending money on it (along with the Dallas Cowboys organization). To the tune of $350m for this grass, upgrades to the big screen, additional concessions, other updated technology. But still no blinding sun blocker I bet.

They need a natural, softer surface to fall on.

Of course, they could just play the FIFA World Cup on this surface to make it more realistic:
