Alphabet’s glitch-plagued robo-cab subsidiary has yet another speed bump. Waymo has recalled 3,800 autonomous taxis after identifying a bug that allowed the vehicles to drive into standing water, per a letter on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) website.
According to the NHTSA, which is probing the mishap, the software recall applies to Waymo vehicles that use the company’s fifth and sixth generation automated driving systems (or ADS).
The recall was prompted by an incident that occurred on April 20, when a self-driving car drove into a flooded creek in San Antonio amid inclement weather and was swept away, CNBC reported. Thankfully, there were no passengers aboard at the time.
Meanwhile, in Austin, Texas, cameras had reportedly caught the wonky autonomous passenger transports puttering right onto a flooded street and coming to a halt, forcing other motorists to drive around them, While no injuries were reported, these malfunctions did raise concerns over the cars’ ability to navigate deluges and other natural disasters.

If a self driving car cannot detect flooded roads, then they have no business being in Texas. At all.
Stealing people’s luggage is not a software glitch ,LOL
Waiting for all of the, “Johnny Cab,” and Maximum Overdrive gifs...
I’m not sure if it was Waymo, but I did read recently about a self driving cab that took a passenger to the airport. They got out of the car and then proceeded to get his luggage out of the back. But as soon as he got out of the car, Waymo decided their interaction was done, and the car drove away. With his luggage.
...an investigation by Nexstar’s KXAN found the company’s driverless vehicles illegally passed school buses with their stop arms out in Austin, Texas. The Austin Independent School District said similar incidents occurred at least 19 times this school year, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened an investigation in October.

4000? That’s Waymo than a few, ain’t it?
Not waymo but in their infinite wisdom, leaders in my city purchased a bunch of driverless taxi vans.
Apparently they so dependable a human sits behind the wheel “just in case”.
To date, one has already run itself into a light pole.
Fortunately, the mostly Republican city council is trying to stop any more spending on this particular boondoggle.
Unfortunately the city has already spent who knows how much so far.
Typical total backwards shit show for my city.
Same thing with the above ground rail system here...locals call it “the skyway to nowhere”.
We have an NFL stadium and a AAA baseball stadium within walking distance of each other and the skyway goes to neither one.
We almost moved out of this crappy city in 2019 and did.
I kick myself regularly for backing out.
The last time we were in San Francisco, I was driving near the Exploratorium. Every time I came to an intersection with one of those WayMo Troubles, I waited to see which way it (the Philippine driver) was turning. I then went AWAY from it. I didn’t care if I had to go around the block again.
In an accident with a WayMo Trouble, does the Philippine driver have the required license, insurance and registration? How do you exchange information? I don’t speak Tagalog.
Alphabet needs to invest in street cars they worked.
Oil/tires/auto industry hit hardest.
Guessing they lied a bit about safety.
I saw a Waymo glitch this morning! I was at a main intersection in Palo Alto, CA at 7:15 am. There are two left turn lanes. I was on the front waiting to turn left. Opposite me are also two left turn lanes. Cars were in both lanes coming my way. They green arrow lit. The car with the human driver (lane closest to median) drove into the intersection. The car next to it, the Waymo car, started to move, stopped, and wouldn’t budget! There was nothing in the intersection to cause it to stop.
It sat there for maybe 10 - 12 seconds. Cars behind it wanting to turn left started passing it on the median lane side. What a cluster!
Finally, Mr. Waymo drove into the intersection and made his left turn.
The irony of that luggage story is that, if a passenger exits the car and leaves the door ajar, the car won’t move. Waymo and others have to dispatch a human to go close the door to get it going again!
The wording in this story doesn’t make sense. It’s a SOFTWARE bug, and they’re updating it. I’d bet these cars can update the software over the cellular connection that they all have. So “recall” is the incorrect word.
or anywhere for that matter.
