Sales had been declining for some time, and there was never a huge demand outside of Milwaukee and Chicago.
That depends on how far you go back. At one point is was #3 in the U.S. They cheapened the process, and eventually lost customers due to declining quality. Not so easy to get them back, especially when you get sold a time or two and are now on someone else's back burner. I am still awaiting the return of Rheingold and Miss Rheingold.

In the late 1970’s, Schlitz was KING of the hill in my small town just south of Houston. I worked at a 7-11. It was our best seller by far. That started to change when Miller Lite hit the market, and when Coors finally started delivering to Texas.
