The man who ran security at 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Games — where a bomber killed two and wounded more than 100 — warns that Iranian “sleeper cells” are likely plotting attacks during next month’s World Cup, as federal officials race to secure the 39-day competition.
“I’m fairly confident there are Iranian sleeper cells or surrogate sleeper cells, and this would be an incredible opportunity for sleeper cells to attack,” Former LAPD Deputy Chief Bill Rathburn told The Post.
His comments came after the feds warned about Iranian “prepositioned sleeper assets” in the US while the war with Iran raged. The fighting is down to a simmer after the US launched strikes on Iranian targets Thursday following attacks on three US ships in a response President Trump called a “love tap.”
Chris Swecker, who ran security for the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, held in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, also pointed to Middle East turmoil as a concerning threat factor.
“There’s an animation around the sport to begin with,” said Swecker, who served as assistant director of the FBI. “You’ve got the presence of foes coming to the World Cup from different parts of the world. It’s not like it can escape the radar of terrorist organizations. It’s right there front and center.”
He cited the threat from “card-carrying terrorist cells, as well as the influence those that have been radicalized on the Internet.”

I live in Massachusetts, one of the venues, and I have been seeing a lot of activity.
In my town, there was SWAT training in an abandoned elementary school.
There were three Blackhawks the other day at low altitude in relatively tight formation.
And just last week my wife and I were were walking through the woods, and I heard bladed engine noises of a big plane.
I am an aviation enthusiast (and former Navy jet mechanic) so I am always tuned into the sky, as many of us are.
I found clearing in the trees, I saw a C130 at very low altitude probably less than 500 feet altitude very close at hand, following the folds of the earth, and heading north to south, and as it came into view very large, in a slow banking turn. It disappeared, heading off to the east. I thought I heard somebody say they heard it was some kind of training thing in advance of the World Cup thing.

They could use those drones at a packed venue the actual Smericsns will be attending like NASCAR or an Alabama game -same thing. Yes. Maybe that’s the true origin of this year’s hantavirus plandemic.

That said, do you not agree that it would amount to criminal negligence to fail to have in depth plans in place in the event of an attack, and that the people carrying out those plans should have training?
Especially in the case of an enemy who has already killed thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of other citizens of other countries in the last 47 years, and whose government has been consistently telling us that they are going to murder us?
Do you deny that World Cup 2026 is what is known as a “Target Rich Environment” that an entity like Iran would take advantage of via a proxy?
They certainly have no problem murdering large numbers of civilians via a proxy as they did on October 7th (and for Iran, “proxies” is just another word for “Iran”. They have no independence. Iran funds them. they don’t act without Iran being onboard. And it has always been that way for the past 47 years. No exceptions) which was also, for Iran, on foreign soil? If they were willing to do that, sexually dismember women, take hostages, and kill with joy, do you feel in some way they would be inclined to be more restrained simply because this is America?

Someone suggested that if apostacy or not allowing members to defect, is part of your religion, it cannot be classified as one or allowed in the USA. Would take care of a lot of religions.
One of the cities. The Iranians weren’t coming, now they are. My wife and I leave Seattle for a two week cruise right before it starts.
Someone is trying to get attention by saying things that appear to be obvious. I don’t think the “Iranian Sleeper Cells” are planning or plotting anything specifically for the World Cup. They would be smarter not to wait and just go blow themselves up at a minor league baseball game. The effect would be the same. The Iranians also don’t have a bunch of spare terrorists just lying around. They need their operatives to keep order in their own country. Not to mention that a lot of their agents are probably reluctant to give up their Door Dash and Uber gigs just to go blow themselves up.
Any Muslime attack would be immediately met with calls to stop “Islamophobia “.
Lot's of potential targets, and in Mexico you also have the cartels.
Not just Iran. Every terrorist wannabe and nut-case sees FIFA and the Olympics as the ultimate place to make a name for themselves.
Here in Atlanta there is much publicity on FIFA projects for beauty and convenience. I hope the silence means Atlanta is preparing for security and has chosen to not show its hand to the bad guys. I hope Atlanta has learned from its Olympics FIASCO.
They would be smarter yet if they just put out television commercials that showed the steady increase in gas prices over the past few months; they would get their point across, and nobody would be hurt.
We care. We just care more about the vast majority of spectators who will be Americans.......Why do you have a problem with that?
