Madangbawi, a landmark rock on Seoul's Gwanaksan Mountain that has recently gained fame among young people as a place to "absorb good energy," has been defaced with graffiti. The Gwanak District Office completed restoration and referred the case to police. Critics say the sudden surge in popularity has led to unexpected side effects.
Madangbawi is a signature landmark located along the No. 1 hiking trail on Gwanaksan. It is widely known as a rest stop where hikers take certification photos.
However, a hiker recently defaced the rock by spraying yellow lacquer paint on it. The message left at the scene — "There's no Gwanaksan luck for you. Nyah!" — drew public outrage.
Analysts say the incident is linked to the rapid surge in Gwanaksan's popularity. Since early this year, the mountain has drawn a sharp increase in visitors after word spread that it is a place to "receive good energy."
The trigger was a January episode of tvN's "You Quiz on the Block." Fortune teller Park Seong-jun mentioned Gwanaksan's fire energy and spiritual force on the show, saying, "When your luck isn't turning around, go to Gwanaksan."
Since then, certification photos taken at the summit marker and Yeonjudae have flooded social media. A video capturing crowds on the hiking trail surpassed 1.47 million views. Long lines formed near the summit marker as hikers waited to take photos, and visitors spilled into the commercial district around nearby Sadang Station, creating unexpected ripple effects.
The shift was also reflected in data. According to keyword analysis platform BlackKiwi, Naver searches for "Gwanaksan" reached 78,700 in February — more than 50,000 higher than the 27,300 recorded in the same period last year. The projected figure for March was 119,000, a 50.93 percent increase from February.

TikTok challenge.
Some people build their legacy by building great things (Donald Trump).
Others say: I am as great as you, because I can destroy great things!
Damn you Kilroy!!
Well, does the rock still give off good energy? Or has the rock become enraged and is now transmitting bad vibes that will cause pestilence, violence, and Kamala Harris becoming President?
"...Yeah, we were over in Hawaii, she jumped off the sailboat and tried to swim to shore. She got about 40 yards from the shore and a Great White hit her. She'd have made it if she hadn't been been wearing her Lucky Ham..."
Watching him struggle to say this without cracking up is worth the watch!
I’ve learned some arcane stuff in my day (mostly by reading cereal boxes); but this one is right up there.
It absorbed the good energy of paint.
Something like that could give hikers a bad name. Not as bad a name as Everest climbers who for years had to step over the long-dead legs of "green boots" on the way up to and down from the summit, but still bad.
