Cardinals fan dangerously hangs off upper deck ledge — and then fights those trying to save him

A group of fans prevented a potential tragic situation Wednesday night when one pulled a man off the ledge of one of the upper sections at Busch Stadium in St. Louis during a Cardinals-Brewers game.

A video posted by Instagram user Oliver Stoffel showed a fan in a blue shirt and shorts straddling the ledge in what appeared to be the 200s section, with one leg dangling off the side.

“Oh, my God,” said an individual watching the scene.

A fan in a red cap then walked up behind the individual and grabbed him from behind, with the individual in blue attempting to hit the man while the hat-wearing spectator pulled him down.

Several other fans walked over at this point, with one appearing to lock in a chokehold of sorts on the fan who had put himself in a precarious situation.

The fan in blue used his hands to hit that fan in the face area, and it appeared the numbers game caught up to him with a group of fans keeping him down.

“Is there security up there?” one fan said in the background of the video.

Fans have died at games after falling long distances, with one attendee at a Rangers game in 2011 dying after falling from the railing while attempting to grab a ball thrown her way.

These heroic fans prevented a potentially fatal situation nearly one year after a fan at a Pirates game at PNC Park fell 21 feet from the stands to the field last April 30 and was in critical condition.

The individual, Kavan Markwood, landed in the intensive care unit and had to use a breathing machine, according to Allegheny General Hospital’s chief medical officer.

Markwood later told triblive.com he had “broken everything.”

NY Post said the man on the ledge hit the man who was trying to save him.

Any of the saving people could have been thrown or pulled over to their deaths.

And if the suicide one had died he would have caused a terrible memory for many children and sensitive adults.

Been going to MLB games since the 1970s. Glad I never saw anything like this. In the last 10 years I’ve only been to handful of games and its pretty much over for me ever going again.

I’m increasingly averse to crowds but notice movie theater attendance is down 37% from 2019 and dropping 10% for the most recent quarter and most non NFL sporting events. NFL only declined 0.8% . Sort of interesting that overall season ticket sales have dropped. MLB has had 3 years of slight increase after dropping each year since 2007. Like with everything else, younger ages of Z and beyond are lowest and boomers are highest in live attendance.

Yep. I remember a drunk fan in Philly fell from an upper deck in the late 70s or early 80s when I was a kid. Fat, no shirt, drunk. He was able to get up and walk out with assistance. And that really wasn't unique. People do foolish things like this all the time and it usually involves booze.

There is a theory that being drunk relaxes you to the point that some fatal impacts in non drunk people are survivable if you’re drunk as a skunk. Sometimes in fatal car crashes the drunk one is the only survivor.

Actually, its the person wearing a seat belt who survives.

In today’s era of social media clicks, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was doing as a promotional stunt, even for that ‘Tums’ ad on the face of the mezzanine.

Not a word about who won the game?

That was certainly the case in the Princess Di crash and yes the driver who died was drunk.

Its getting pretty hard to get killed in a full size Mercedes with a seat belt on. But, little cars don’t fare so well.
