But, go figure, way back when, in a tizzy, my doctor said to stop taking Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) OTC Nexium, Prevacid or Prilosec because with extended use of those acid reflux drugs may increase the risk of dementia by a third.

More proof that, doctors practice medicine, and if they practice long enough they may finally get it right.

I had a Whipple for ampullary cancer in June 2024. The output of my pyloric valve is sewn to my jejunum as an "anastomosis". The join is also where the stomach acid passes through. In practice, the surgical oncologist prescribes a PPI to protect the anastomosis from acid damage. I was prescribed pantoprazole initially. It was causing gynecomastia. After the stent was placed in my stomach, I was prescribed omeprazole. It caused horrible itching and red welts all over my body. The current choice is famotidine. It seems to be working without intolerable side effects. No idea if there are other issues happening in the background.
