FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — In a touching tribute to one of America's most formative chapters in air travel, dozens of emotional passengers gathered at the gate to board the final scheduled flight of Spirit Airlines, preparing themselves for one last, glorious, no-holds-barred midair brawl.
Witnesses described a reverent atmosphere at the terminal, as longtime customers embraced, wiped away tears, and quietly slipped brass knuckles on before boarding began.
"We wanted to honor the legacy," said gate agent Melissa Rios, who was seen handing out commemorative mouthguards at the check-in counter. "One last time, we all want to feel that electric tension — the kind that says, ‘At any moment, the violent melee could begin. Rest in power, Spirit Airlines."
Airline staff reportedly worked hard to preserve the authentic Spirit experience for the final voyage, including overbooking the flight by 60% and charging an additional $45 "pre-fight positioning fee" for passengers hoping to start conflicts near the aisle. Flight attendants, many of whom appeared visibly moved, have vowed to help instigate several conflicts and then not intervene during the altercations, no matter how bloody they may become.
As the final passengers boarded, a spontaneous chant broke out at the gate: "ONE! LAST! FIGHT! ONE! LAST! FIGHT!"
At publishing time, the flight had been delayed an hour after a pre-flight skirmish put seven people in the hospital.

Not my passengers. Not my cruise ship.
That livery is made of 100% awesome!
Were the cops called, just for old times sake...?
Note to the Bee: You got me. Nicely done!
A few years ago I needed to book a flight and Spirit was much cheaper than the alternative. I figured there had to be a catch and went with the other airline.
All it takes is one very bad experience and passengers leave forever.
I got in the middle of a Air France protest shutdown and will never fly them again.
It took Shellie at the Delta gate about four minutes to get me a far better route that would get me home only an hour later than my original flight. I didn't know about the Spirit thing until later ... and now that I think about it she and her fellow gate clerk looked a tad clenched.
Yes, the connections were very tight and my subsequent flights were already boarding when I finally landed. But I made it home, THANKS TO SHELLIE AT THE BOISE AIRPORT!!
OMG the Bee stung me....again.
This post reminds me a hockey video I saw
Two players were fighting on the ice.
After they went to penalty box, they both asked if the other was OK, congratulated each other, and joked how they need to get in better shape if they are going to fight, and will train together in the off-season. All as friendly as could be....
Well, clearly it was nothing personal. Just business!

We can laugh, but prepare for these people to start flying with the rest of us very soon.
