Bolshevik--Waring's Pennsylvanians
I want some Communism!
I had trouble following the fast talking, but the instrumentals seem to be influenced by Spike Jones.
Waring's Pennsylvanians cut "Bolshevik" in 1926, 15 years before Spike Jones waxed his first disc. It is sung in "Bolshevik talk," a playful code in which Russian suffixes are tacked on to English words--"hey, pass-ski me-ski the whiskey." Interestingly, this record came out during Prohibition. I have the sheet music for "Bolshevik."
Waring's Pennsylvanians would have a boatload of hits, and I heard them perform in 1982, two years before Fred Waring, their leader, passed away. At the concert, they didn't perform "Bolshevik," but the did do "Dry Bones," (1947), one of the first songs that I learned to sing.
Fake, but accurate.
Well, then, it looks like Spike Jones was influenced by Waring.
Churchill loved those guys.
Hey. This was something we used to sing when I was growing up.
