California was lunacized by out of staters too. Too many Yankees moving to the west coast bringing their Northeastern “sensibilities” with them.
California and to some extent Florida, is the way it is because of it’s history.
The Gold Rush of 1849 drew in thousands of fortune hunters and those that prey upon them. Then the post Civil War population shift west for settlers and then the invention of movie industry brought in thousands of people seeking fame and fortune. Few actually made it. Then the Depression brought in more people fleeing the poverty of the Dust Bowl and Appalachia. The post WWII economic boom just added to the population and then the invasion of the Summer of Love hippies in San Francisco made it completely insane.....
