SARASOTA, Fla. - Florida authorities say a woman is under arrest after she was asleep behind the wheel with her Tesla stopped in the middle of Interstate 75.
According to state police, Kimberly Brown, 37, was found around 2 a.m. on I-75 on Friday, April 24, intoxicated at nearly twice the legal limit.
Florida State Trooper Kenn Watson called the situation very dangerous, as Brown should not have been driving.
“Unfortunately, she was intoxicated more than twice the legal limit and had made the assumption that the Tesla would get her home safely,” Watson said.
Authorities said Brown was using the vehicle’s Autopilot feature.
According to Alistair Weaver, editor at Edmunds, part of Tesla’s Autopilot safety features includes eye detection, which makes sure the driver is alert.
“You must pay attention. They’re actually monitors within the vehicle that make sure that you’re looking forward and will initially warn you, and then ultimately shut down the car and shut down the system if you’re not paying attention,” Weaver said.
Troopers said the eye detection feature is the reason why Brown’s vehicle ultimately came to a halt.
Authorities note this should serve as a reminder to all drivers to use autopilot features for what they’re intended for: an assist tool.

"Autopilot, take me home!"
Monitors within the vehicle ultimately shut down the car stopped in the middle of an Interstate.
Sounds dangerous.
What does in the middle of the interstate mean? On the road surface? Median strip or shoulder or off the road? Hopefully it was one of the safer options. Stopped on the road would be just waiting for a certain type of truck driver to plow into you.
Pretty dicey on the matrix with those eyebrows.
At least she was aware enough to program the car to drive home, but why did it stop in the road? Run out of juice?
Well, she is one of the few who can rightly use the SOV-CIT argument that she was TRAVELING and not DRIVING.

Who was the MENSA member who came up with that idea?
First read tends to look like —
Twice the speed limit, but not.
Can’t she do that in Frisco — with the self driving lyfts.
Don’t need to be sober for those.
Authorities can charge the driver and the TESLA .
Precedent can be Lee Marvin drunk on his drunk horse in Cat Ballou.
On the shoulder.
Just remembered there is an essay by Ray Bradbury: “Drunk and In Charge of a Bicycle”, inspired by a true story of a police report of someone in Ireland.
Those vehicles are dangerous, too.
She reminds me of a witchy neighbor I used to have. That woman seriously gave me the eebie- jeebies whenever I was around her. Literally the hairs on the back of my next would raise. On my arms, too.
She reminds me of a witchy neighbor I used to have.
Did sparks fly from her fingertips?
I don’t want to know what she did with that silver spoon.
What’s the difference between that and a Waymo?
For Teslas autopilot is not FSD. It is traffic assisted cruise control + lane centering. It will limit speed/stop for obstacles in the road.
