Pete Hegseth tells Europe that the free ride is over
American Thinker ^ | 24 Apr, 2026 | Andrea Widburg

Beginning with Woodrow Wilson’s justification for getting America into WWI, America has been the world’s policeman, a role that escalated after it was the only wealthy nation standing in 1945. However, it’s not 1945 anymore. The Cold War is over, allegiances have shifted, and Europe is not Europe. That’s why it was simply awesome today when Secretary of War Pete Hegseth explicitly told Asia and Europe (although he was clearly speaking to NATO) that the “time for free-riding is over.”

In 1916, when the “Great War” in Europe was already in its second year, Woodrow Wilson won reelection in part by pointing out that he’d kept America out of the war and promising that he would continue to do so. However, for myriad reasons, by 1917, Wilson could no longer maintain that promise.

However, Wilson, a high-minded, racist, eugenics-believing progressive, needed a high-minded reason for tossing young American men into those bloody trenches. America, he said, was a savior. “The world must be made safe for democracy,” and America was the one to do it.

There was no room for self-interest:

We desire no conquest, no dominion. We seek no indemnities for ourselves, no material compensation for the sacrifices we shall freely make.

Instead, virtue would be its own reward:

We are but one of the champions of the rights of mankind. We shall be satisfied when those rights have been made as secure as the faith and the freedom of nations can make them.

Those same principles have guided American warfare ever since. Yes, we entered WWII after Japan attacked us and Germany then declared war on us, but in the aftermath of a war that cost us over 400,000 American lives, we dedicated ourselves to rebuilding a shattered Europe and protecting it from Soviet domination.

Germany has a population of 83 million, about one-fifth of which are foreign born. This percentage isn’t much different from other democracies (with the obvious exceptions of Japan and other East Asian democracies). A majority of the foreign-born persons of Germany are from other European countries. A substantial minority are from the Middle East.

We, the U.S., have been the pioneers in showing that a country can be formed on the basis of a proposition (i.e., that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights); instead of a shared blood-line.

Having said that, foreign-born persons who refuse to sign up for the draft, either in the U.S. or in Germany, and especially those who refuse the draft if implemented, should be deported to their country of origin.

Barring Wilson's incompetence, our default position is going to be to save ourselves. New York is allowing something like its 333rd raghead mosque to be built. Jihadists in America are bragging about their goal of controlling America, then killing all who don't convert.

Don't take it lightly. The communists bragged about their 45 goals to destroy America and we brushed it off. 60 years later, they've accomplished every one.

We're not as slick as we think we are.

What is your source for 15 years? This source says five years:

https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/germany-wants-to-double-its-defense-spending-where-should-the-money-go/

Why do say “claims”? The Germans have already been increasing their military spending. They have been letting contracts for new submarines, frigates, air defense weapons, and other weapons systems, and also increased their production of artillery shells and other munitions. And, they have already authorized a draft.

And, why do you even care? Are you an American thinking Germany will attack the U.S.? Are you a Russian thinking Germany will attack Russia? Maybe you’re upset because you really want Germany to take responsibility for its own defense and its share of the defense of Europe and think Germany is lying about its military buildup.

“ But if Europe has been cooking their books to the extent I think they’ve been cooking their books, they can’t afford us.”

They would just give us a bunch of worthless IOUs - like they’ve been doing for the last 70 years.

Western culture is getting wiped out by Islam via mass migration - and that has to be reversed - but beyond that there is a balance of power that’s going to tip toward China soon unless we stop it. I think that is what this Iran war is really about.

You have to ask yourself whether the wars the United States has engaged in for the last four decades have accelerated or slowed the migration trend you've identified and who if not the West has ultimately benefited from them?

For too many decades Europe didn’t care enough about its own defense to even meet NATO’s paltry military funding guidelines. They expected, and became accustomed to, having the U.S. shoulder most of the burden. This exploitative free ride is now ending. Ironically, these ingrates will soon discover that defending themselves will be far more expensive than had they merely met their NATO spending obligations.

Which is pleasing to China, Russia, and their N. Korean and Muslim allies. There is a reason for strategic allies, though not all support for such and interventions are wise.

Work backwards from the extreme:

What would the world look like if America was strict isolationist, and having withdrew all forces in the world, then what threats would it face?

What is your source for 20 percent?

> "NATO did everything they could to box in Russia whereas Russia became a serious enemy to all of the west. What’s funny here is NATO thought they had that big brother to fight their Russian war for them. Ha ha, Trump entered the room and gave them the middle finger." <

During a speech at the EU Parliament’s foreign affairs committee in September 2023, even NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg clearly and repeatedly acknowledged that Putin made the decision to invade Ukraine because of fears of NATO expansionism.

His comments, read as follows:

The background was that President Putin declared in the autumn of 2021, and actually sent a draft treaty that they wanted NATO to sign, to promise no more NATO enlargement.
That was what he sent us. And was a pre-condition for not invade Ukraine. Of course we (warmongers) didn’t sign that.

The opposite happened.
He wanted us to sign that promise, never to enlarge NATO.
He wanted us to remove our military infrastructure in all Allies that have joined NATO since 1997, meaning half of NATO, all the Central and Eastern Europe, we should remove NATO from that part of our Alliance, introducing some kind of BS, or second class membership. We rejected that.<

"So he went to war to prevent NATO, more NATO, close to his borders."

This is why I don’t post much here.

Because of the members that get all bent out of shape when someone expresses an opinion that does not coincide precisely with theirs and make snotty retorts.

Why is this any of my business? Because this is a news discussion and opinion forum of which I am a member and have been for some years.

Trading insults with people doesn’t qualify as a discussion.

Thanks for the mature response.

Goodbye

“Merz has admitted in private that they can’t raise an army in Germany because it will be majority Muslim.”

Proof for your statement?

I found zero evidence to support this claim of yours. Perhaps you can share your evidence?

The cultures of England, Scotland, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany are being wiped out by their own doing it are already wiped out.

They rejected Christianity, demolished their culture and created a vacuum. Islam was brought in later and occupied some if that vacuum.

The wound was self inflicted when they pushed out Christianity

Anke, you edited that statement.

Stoltenberg explained that Putin’s “draft treaty” from December 2021 demanded that NATO remove all military infrastructure from every country that joined after 1997 (including Poland, the Baltics, and the Balkans). He argued that accepting this would have created a “second-class” status for half the Alliance and violated the sovereign right of nations to choose their own security arrangements.

Stoltenberg’s main point was that Putin’s war backfired. He noted that while Putin invaded to get “less NATO” on his borders, he ended up with more NATO because the invasion directly prompted Finland and Sweden to join the Alliance.

In 2014 Ukraine was not going to join NATO.

But then Russia invaded it and tire off Crimea and the Donbas, prompting Ukraine to look for help.

If Russia had not invaded in 2014, Ukraine would be in Rossiski Mir
