Florida woman claimed driving 123 mph was OK because she was driving 'a Supra'

Blame it on the car. That's what a Florida woman tried to do recently after deputies pulled her over for allegedly driving 123 mph on a highway.

While the driver was going well over the posted speed limit of 50 mph, she was quick to offer an excuse to deputies in body camera footage released by the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

"Honestly, it's just because he has a Supra, and then I thought it was all right, OK to go fast and everything," the woman told police, referring to the red Toyota sports car she had been driving. The car apparently belonged to the male passenger who had been along for the ride.

Jail records show authorities arrested Siria Lopez, a 25-year-old from Bonita Springs, on suspicion of speeding and a DUI around 1 a.m. Thursday, April 9. Lopez posted $3,500 in bond money to the Lee County Sheriff's Office and was released from the county jail later that day. (snip)

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, this was not the first time that specific red Supra was used to reach such high speeds. In December 2024, the male passenger, whom Lopez said in the body camera footage owned the car, was allegedly cited for going 109 mph on the same road and in the same car.

"Last time I saw you, you were doing 110, so I knew you were doing 125," the officer remarked as he handcuffed Lopez.

Lopez was also cited for careless, aggressive driving, modified exhaust and improper turn signal.

With a population of about 50,000, Bonita Springs is near Cape Cod and Fort Myers.

Here’s a 2024 model Supra...

I think that’s a GR 86. Today’s Supras (I had a 1983 one) are uglier than that.

My Ford Focus (stop laughing) speedometer goes to 140.

I’ve often wondered why.

The problem here is it is way too easy to get off. 100k bond. When you are going double the speed limit and you say it is a Supra so it is ok, you are too stupid to drive. Typical black chick from Florida.

Our mint-condition (248,643 miles) 2005 Ford 500 cruises very nicely at 65mph...

Now that I’ve had cataract surgery, recently, I’ll be able to push it all the way to 70mph...

MLB outfielder Jose Canseco (who once was hit on the top of his head by a batted ball which went over the wall for a home run) was stopped in February 1989 for driving his 1989 red Jaguar XJS at 125 miles per hour on Interstate 95 in Florida.

He calmly said to the officer: “It didn’t feel like it. You know how you can be driving 125 and it feels like it’s only 55?”

The newer Toyota Supras are notorious for getting light at high speed and drifting around. There was a test of various cars in a youtube video 0-150-0 Speed Test 2023 | Car and Driver and the Supra was hard to keep in a straight line on an airport runway. My car did the run in about 25 seconds with no problems, but I don't drive it fast on public roads. My Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing is supposed to top out at 206 mph.

We were advised to regularly drive the car at or above 4000 RMP to reduce carbon buildup and keep fuel injectors clean. But at 85mph, the highest legal speed limit in the state, the car’s rpm is only about 3200. Yeah, I went with a can of Barryman’s B12 instead.

By this logic, the old Ford Fiesta shouldn’t ever have been seen driving above 22 mph.

back in the 80s and before then, when transmissions weren’t as good as they are now, it was easy to exceed 4000rpms at higher speeds. Now they have more ‘gears’ and better ratios.
However, and I could easily be wrong on this as I am no expert, but I suspect that it’s a myth that you can “blow off carbon” in your valves and heads by running at higher RPMs.

The issue wasn’t so much carbon as clogged injectors. Those can be cleaned at higher RPMs.

I solved the issue, in addition to Barryman’s, by switching to “Sport Mode” on surface streets. That way, it was running at or above 4000 grand at 45-55 miles per hour. We went over to Katy to eat out (About 20 miles) on the Loop 8 service road.

Our real problem is that the car is 7 years old and has only about 31,000 miles. We were away from home for nearly 150 days last year, and it sat unstarted for periods of 35 and 47 days. The gasoline in the system evidently vanished and clogged the injectors.
