Kevin Warsh, the 56-year-old former Federal Reserve governor, was in the hot seat for his Senate Banking Committee confirmation hearing and said his Fed would be independent from the White House.
Warsh fielded questions on issues ranging from his views on monetary policy to his sprawling and complex personal finances to his ties to the Trump White House. He would become the wealthiest Fed chair if confirmed.
Questions about the Fed’s long-cherished independence have dominated the discourse surrounding the central bank during President Donald Trump’s second term. Warsh gave a qualified endorsement of Fed independence — but noted he doesn’t believe that dynamic is endangered when the central bank’s actions are questioned by elected leaders.
Trump, who originally nominated Jerome Powell for Fed chair during his first term in 2017, has waged a long-term campaign to try to browbeat the central bank leader into hastily slashing interest rates. Powell in recent months has been embroiled in a Department of Justice criminal probe after refusing to acquiesce to Trump’s demands. Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” early Tuesday that he doesn’t plan to pressure the DOJ to wrap up that probe.

He's no easy money Santa Claus and he might earn Donald Trump's wrath for being too hawkish once he's in office.
Meanwhile, it's time to end the Powell investigation. There's never in the history of the republic been an official criminally charged for a cost overrun unless he was skimming.
Beating up on Powell is purely vindictive and it postpones his replacement.
Nope. He has to go through the system. The idea that he can hold onto his job because the corrupt crook is being investigated is a joke. Trump should fire him and take it to SCOTUS where they can try to justify the idea that the founders wanted an “un-fireable” employee under the President. I’m sure they’ll find a way but at least then we can dispel the notion that these fools are above politics and actually care what the constitution says. The real question is why does Tillis have so many committee assignments. The answer of course is that the Repuke party is too afraid to go against Trump (which is their natural inclination) so they get this hack coward Tillis to do their dirty work since he doesn’t care what his constituents think anymore.
I caught a clip, Tillis had the audacity to try to explain away the 3 billion “over runs” to 700M and then suggest that, that’s barely anything (While refusing to fund ICE I’ll remind you). I can’t wait for these hacks to get thrown out of office. I’d rather see Trump fight the Democrats then watch him try to curry favor with these Repukes. Clean house.
Boo hoo
How do you knpw there’s no skimming or corruption?
Powell refused to furnish information to the justice department. No one can just brush of a DOJ request for information w/o appearing to have something to hide.
The amount of the original renovation and the amount of the overrun are so far above the normal cost that I would be shocked if corruption was not involved.
Where in his mandate is Powell empowered to build a Taj Mahal? There are so many Government owned properties that could have been utilized and with the USA $39T in debt this Powell project represents a breach of fiduciary duty.
Trump is building a ballroom that has been needed for decades, official gatherings in tents on a lawn in the rain. The ballroom is financed with donor money and there is a wide leftist outcry. Powell spends billions on an unnecessary poorly designed renovation and no one should utter a squeak?
You’re flinging crap at a wall to see what sticks.
The cost is up 30% since 2023. Aside from building costs increasing., the contractors had to deal with the challenges inherent in renovating a complex that consists of buildings from 1931 and 1937 and is situated on what was originally swampy ground. Calling Powell a “fiduciary” can by no stretch of the imagination create the expectation that he’s conversant in construction, much less restoration.
The new ballroom...however it’s funded ...was supposed to cost $100 million when it was first proposed in February. The current estimate? $300 million.
Regarding the ballroom, there are two issues: (1) many, if not most, architects who’ve assessed it find it disproportionate to the existing structure and ungainly, and (2) private funding a Presidential pet project blurs the lines between civic-mindedness and influence-peddling. Along those lines, do you believe that the Qataris gave the President a $400 million airplane with no expectation of a return on that investment?
Wow, you certainly come loaded with MSM spin. Have a good day.
G’day, mate!
“Powell a “fiduciary” can by no stretch of the imagination create the expectation that he’s conversant in construction, much less restoration.”
I guess you miss the point. When you are spending other people’s money you have a fiduciary obligation to spend it wisely. You have no right to undertake a project outside your competence.
Someone behaving honorably would have looked at other ways to accomplish housing the Fed, not tried to fulfill their grandiose ideas. This waste of the Nation’s money is inexcusable.
Your defense of a 30% overrun is laughable. Obviously the man doesn’t know how to execute a strong contract either. Cost overruns are not a given with competent builders and project design. Was it a surprise that the buildings were old? Were there no other Government properties suitable or was the criterion magnificence suitable for Jerome Powell’s legacy.
I just pointed out a 200% overrun on a ballroom that’s yet to be built.
“Regarding the ballroom, there are two issues:”
Funny thing about “most architects” they are the equivalent of the distinguished scientists who signed a consensus statement on global warming IOW talking through their hats and knowing nothing.
The military is adding to the ballroom construction so that it will serve as a bunker and foreign dignitaries will be safe from drones & missiles while inside. That aspect of the ballroom was not initially revealed, in line with security interests. The donors are still covering the cost. ‘
The architects you refer to bloviate for free. Like every other person with self importance, few accomplishments and no skin in the game each thinks they could do better but they have not, no one has. Trump has engineered the construction of a space that was sorely needed.
Your Qatari gambit is toothless. Gifts are given & received on the National level all the time. If you are naive enough to think that Trump would prostitute himself or our Nation over a plane I have a bridge to sell you.
Yes you fell into that trap.
The only trap is the one the Administration fell into.
Destroying Powell will block the installation of a Fed chair of their choosing.
No one wants to destroy Powell. The justice departments just wants to see the documents to exclude corrupt dealings. If Powell has nothing to hide he shouldn’t have climbed on his high horse. Powell is the one who compelled the legal process by refusing 3x to furnish documents and to meet with the DOJ. I believe he is stonewalling exactly because he has something to hide.
“As Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem oversaw the leasing and proposed $70 million purchase of a luxury Boeing 737-8 BBJ jet, featuring a queen-sized bed, shower, and bar.”
Where is the indignation? Where is the criminal investigation?
“In January, the New York Post first reported that the Labor Department’s inspector general was looking into complaints that Chavez-DeRemer was having an affair with a subordinate, drinking alcohol on the job and using taxpayer-funded travel to visit with friends and family members.”
Where is the indignation? Where is the criminal investigation?
OBVIOUSLY, Powell’s is a case of targeted, political prosecution.
[Even if it weren’t, is this impasse really worth it to the Aministration? Because Warsh ain’t going through Tillis.]
Sorry Charlie. No sale. Ignoring the facts and bringing up unrelated issues doesn’t make your point.
