World Cup in crisis as ticket, travel and transport bust-up kicks off between host states and Fifa who are making $11bn

THE 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be expensive for fans.

Depending on what stadium your ticket is for — if you even got one due to exorbitant prices — transit and lodging costs are cripplingly high.

This year’s World Cup was marketed as a tournament to get Americans excited about soccer and be a place where all fans could come and watch their countries compete.

Instead, it has become a bidding war with both Fifa and local governments setting incredibly high prices.

The cheapest tickets for less favorable games start at around $140 for a seat, but can range upwards of $11,000 for more exciting games.

Take, for example, the United States’ opening game against Paraguay in Inglewood, California on June 12.

Earlier this month Fifa added new tiers of tickets, charging up to $4,105 for a “front category 1” seat.

The less desirable “category 1” seats still sold for $2,735 and the even lesser “category 2” tickets ranged between $1,940 to $2,330.

If a fan did end up getting a ticket at an affordable price, they are now facing incredibly high transit costs.

This month, just weeks away from the start of the tournament, New York/New Jersey and Boston both announces massive price hikes to transportation to and from host stadiums.

Soccer is considered the most important sport in Germany, France, UK…Israel too.

The only manly sport from Europe is Rugby and it is pretty brutal. I would include jousting without blunted spears as in the days of old. Alas, illegal now. Extremely manly was that contest.

Cool. But all those countries have large muslim populations. However, to each her own. As long as the soccer riots are kept under control, a good time will be had by all. "For those who like that sort of thing," said Miss Brodie in her best Edinburgh voice, "that is the sort of thing they like".

Seriously, I hope those who partake of it enjoy themselves and get their money's worth. Myself? I will be far far away in a distant galaxy.

I never did bull fighting, but I did catch alligators at night with my bare hands when I was a crazy teenager.

How much FIFA makes on the World Cup — largely through tv right and advertising, not ticket sales — is completely irrelevant to grotesque price gouging by the NJ Transit Authority.

NJ is trying to jump a routine $12.50 ticket to Metlife Stadium to $150.

FIFA should just shift those games to some other venue.

We’re talking about routine transit to a football stadium. The crowd for the soccer game won’t be any larger than it would be for a football game; the stadium won’t magically get bigger. The infrastructure is already there. NJ is just running a shakedown like a mafia goon.

Fifa is supposed to make a deal regarding transportation with the local authorities. If they reneged from the deal they have already made, it is up to FIFA to relocate the games to other cities that are already hosting them such as Dallas and Kansas City.

Soccer is big in Europe, and has been since Europe was full of mostly white people.

It’s a trend in blue cities now to shut down streets for things like this and “festivals” because it’s just “so much nicer and healthier for the environment” and it’s utter BS because it makes parking even more of a nightmare and the blue cities refuse to add more parking because “it’s ugly” and think it’ll force everyone to use their public transportation or “bike into town” (yeah right) so the suburb people just Uber in causing MORE pollution.

Soccer was invented in Britain ("association football").

Greg Gutfeld has been joking about illegal immigrants trying to claim asylum in England by saying they are gay--the evidence for that is that they like soccer.

The stadium probably sells out for many events and people get there without paying $150/head.

FIFA is being a pig financially and NJ Transit wants access to the trough too.

I used to have a DVR on which the first fast forward speed was 2x. At that speed the game was watchable and I could actually see plays develop, must like a time lapse video of a glacier flowing.

Maybe on a smaller field with looser offsides rules it might be interesting.

Iran was supposed to play a World Cup game here in Seattle.

They cancelled once, then agreed to play it.

I do not follow soccer. They may have cancelled again.

Seattle votes 70%-80% Democrat.

The Iran national team will get a standing ovation if they actually play their game here!

The US has already hosted a soccer World Cup in 1994. The nation somehow survived. Not a fan of the game but it is the biggest spectator sport thingy around. All I ask is that I can ignore it in peace for the most part. I expect I will be posting the odd comment here on FR.
