World Cup in crisis as ticket, travel and transport bust-up kicks off between host states and Fifa who are making $11bn

THE 2026 World Cup is shaping up to be expensive for fans.

Depending on what stadium your ticket is for — if you even got one due to exorbitant prices — transit and lodging costs are cripplingly high.

This year’s World Cup was marketed as a tournament to get Americans excited about soccer and be a place where all fans could come and watch their countries compete.

Instead, it has become a bidding war with both Fifa and local governments setting incredibly high prices.

The cheapest tickets for less favorable games start at around $140 for a seat, but can range upwards of $11,000 for more exciting games.

Take, for example, the United States’ opening game against Paraguay in Inglewood, California on June 12.

Earlier this month Fifa added new tiers of tickets, charging up to $4,105 for a “front category 1” seat.

The less desirable “category 1” seats still sold for $2,735 and the even lesser “category 2” tickets ranged between $1,940 to $2,330.

If a fan did end up getting a ticket at an affordable price, they are now facing incredibly high transit costs.

This month, just weeks away from the start of the tournament, New York/New Jersey and Boston both announces massive price hikes to transportation to and from host stadiums.

Haven’t we imported enough of the third world already? We don’t need their shithole sports either. America will see first hand the kind of filth that follows soccer.

I was in TX earlier this year and the DFW metro - the businesses, residents, were so excited for this. Dallas planned to shut down some of their streets for pedestrians only. Would be such a shame if this gets screwed up.

How much is Jerry going to charge to park near the games at Jerry World?

And it was forcing blue cities like L.A. to clean up! At least superficially. (Which would already be more than normal.)

Soccer is a professional sport? Who knew?

The weird sport I watch when the opportunity presents itself is Rugby. A bunch of bruisers in short pants visciously clunking into one another. Apparently no rules short of murdering someone. And always good for a laugh.

If I understood what they were doiong, it wouldn’t be funny any more. Ignorance is bliss or at least a good laugh.

Rugby’s great. The US team that was once ranked number one in the Rugby 7s, got blanked at the Hong Kong tournament. Word is they are trying to convert failed NFL players and attract a “more diverse” crowd. So they’ll ghetto up another sport and lose the fans they have and not get any new ones.

While ZipRecruiter is seeing annual salaries as high as $89,500 and as low as $35,000, the majority of Fifa Player salaries currently range between $54,000 (25th percentile) to $75,000 (75th percentile) with top earners (90th percentile) making $82,500 annually across the United States. There are 26 players per team. That makes the average over $70K a year...to play a game by choice. And the people we are talking about are top tier and the higher salaries. Not real shabby.

But let’s gear this toward the competition they are playing in. The average salary for a professional soccer player varies wildly by league, ranging from roughly $50,000–$400,000 annually in major leagues like MLS to $3–$5 million+ annually in top European leagues, with top-tier “star” players earning tens of millions per year.

Maybe the teams (or their players) could cut out FIFA and arrange the matches one-to-one.

Rates vary by match stage. Group stage spots start around $75, while knockout rounds can reach $175 or more. Some secondary or premium options have been listed as high as $225.

If a ticket costs more than I make per hour working, I pass.

CEOs in the 1970s watched ballplayers make more than they did running major corporations.

I’ve long found Hockey to be the most entertaining sport to watch.

Soccer was great for my kids growing up. Every kid on the field got a great workout.

Hockey for kids is expensive and would make me get up VERY early in the morning, so it didn’t happen.
