Maryland lawmakers have sent the governor a bill to protect firefighters and rescue workers from being penalized over their lawful use of medical marijuana off the job.
The House of Delegates approved the Senate-passed legislation, SB 439 from Sen. Carl Jackson (D) in a 108-23 vote on Monday, about two weeks after passing a companion measure, HB 797 from Del. Adrian Boafo (D).
The Senate bill, now having cleared both chambers in identical form, heads next to the desk of Gov. Wes Moore (D), who can sign or veto it, or allow it to become law without his signature. The identical House bill cleared a committee in the opposite chamber but did not receive floor action there by the time lawmakers adjourned for the session on Monday night.
The passage of the legislation comes after years of attempts over recent sessions to enact the reform aimed at giving emergency service professionals the option to use cannabis as an alternative treatment for health conditions that commonly afflict the first responder community.

Flee Marland. Run for your lives.
Maryland!
Wow, man, I need another hit before you’ll get me to go into that building to save the baby, so chill out.
Baked first responders. They probably did that to juice recruiting…
Not the easiest of calls. Personal freedom vs. societal restraint.
Hmm. Can Maryland firefighters and rescue workers get roaring drunk while off the job? If so, why not allow a marijuana high while off the job?
Just don’t show up at work even a little bit drunk, or even a little bit high.
And, yeah. I suppose my argument could be extended to a hard drug high. But that’s where society must draw a line. Like it or not, alcohol and medical marijuana are legal. Hard drugs, no.
Your mileage may vary.
P.S. I don’t like marijuana. Tried it once many decades ago, and hated it. Zero desire to try it again.
I believe i would respect a fireman who smokes crack-off duty than a die hard liberal
It’s important to pols to keep the voters dumb as rocks
Hey, who doesn’t want their first responders high as a kite. It’s the least Governor Stolen Valor can do for us.
The “medical” gambit working once again to get the wedge in
No clue what “medical” marijuana is.
Decades ago, people used marijuana before bed, improved their late night connections. Is that “medical”?
> No clue what “medical” marijuana is. <
It’s any kind of marijuana you’re legally allowed to possess. And in most states, that will take a doctor’s note. Hence the “medical”.
I know someone who works in a legal marijuana dispensary (store). He says his customers doctor-shop. If Doctor A won’t give the guy a note, the guy moves on to Doctor B. Etc.
Eventually the “patient” will get a note. It could be a prescription for marijuana to control anxiety, or for pain relief, etc.
I’m sure there is scamming involved. But it’s above my pay grade to comment about these notes in general.

The only way to catch a doper is when you yourself become a smoker. The surest way to make them bleed is when you bust their ass and steal their weed.
Hopefully they are smart enough to not do that.
