President Donald Trump announced a U.S. blockade on the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday.
Trump made the announcement in a post on his Truth Social account, blaming the failure to reach a deal with Iran during talks in Pakistan this weekend.
"So, there you have it, the meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not. Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz," Trump wrote.
"At some point, we will reach an 'ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO IN, ALL BEING ALLOWED TO GO OUT' basis, but Iran has not allowed that to happen by merely saying, 'There may be a mine out there somewhere,' that nobody knows about but them. THIS IS WORLD EXTORTION, and Leaders of Countries, especially the United States of America, will never be extorted," Trump continued.
"I have also instructed our Navy to seek and interdict every vessel in International Waters that has paid a toll to Iran. No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas. We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. "The Blockade will begin shortly. Other Countries will be involved with this Blockade. Iran will not be allowed to profit off this Illegal Act of EXTORTION. They want money and, more importantly, they want Nuclear. Additionally and, at an appropriate moment, we are fully 'LOCKED AND LOADED,' and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran!" he added.

This was his strongest potential move legally. It enables us to cut off Iran’s oil trade, including in ships flagged under other countries.

However, the PRICE of oil in the USA is absolutely dependent on the global price of oil.
Supply goes down, the price goes up - everywhere!
Once there is a declared blockade, we have the right to prevent entry or exit by ships flagged under third party countries, including China. That includes boarding and disabling. If China wish to defy that they would have to break our blockade by attacking our ships. They will not do that.
Well ...if China challenges us, we will back off the blockade ...then we destroy Kharg and other pumping stations ability to pump, so China is completely cut off...they would have to buy other oil(Saudi, u.s., venezuela/US)...in meantime, if China doesn’t help us get rid of Iran forever(and the houtis also), we will do it, reopen the oil in Iran and sell it to China at the appropriate price. Saudis will be able to ship oil out of the red sea to the locals(without the Houtis).
Unless China doesn’t want that, it will help in the destruction of Iran...

He may have calculated that the midterms are off-year elections which are likely lost anyway based on historical trends. Gas prices will go up but probably a short term one year or less hit.
If so maybe the calculus might be ‘Why not do something non-political, long term and strategic since no one else will do it and DC will never love him no matter what he does anyway’.
Trump might be focused on big things and legacy in the remaining years of his presidency.
