The human population has already grown too large and demanding for Earth to sustainably support at current consumption levels, a new study warns.
Based on more than two centuries of population data, a team led by Corey Bradshaw of Flinders University in Australia found humanity is living well beyond the bounds of what our planet can support long-term.
Ecologists describe the ability of an environment to sustain a species' population as its "carrying capacity". It's an estimate of the number of individuals from any given species that can survive long-term, based on the resources at hand and the rate at which those resources regenerate.
Around 12 billion is the absolute maximum estimated carrying capacity, but it's far from the optimum at our current levels of resource consumption, which Bradshaw and team calculate to be 2.5 billion.

You right.
50 years is span of my memory.
Come to think about it English economist Thomas Malthus, whose 1798 book “An Essay on the Principle of Population” warned that the world’s population would inevitably outstrip its food supply.
So 230 years!
By the way Paul Ehrlich, died March 13, 2026, in Palo Alto, California.
One prophet of doom just reduced his carbon footprint!
Paul Ehrlich died March 13, 2026, in Palo Alto, California
Proves the 50s & 60s were good times.
The way I heard it, the entire population of Earth could fit inside Gary, Indiana but they would be miserable.
Yep, nothing new. We keep finding ways to make more food, we make many more times the food per acre than we did in the ‘70s. Plus, when I fly somewhere, I always see massive amounts of land that are just unused. Either ocean, with nobody in sight, or land, with nothing on it...90% of the time.
I don’t think we’re even close to any limit.
“The human population has already grown too large and demanding for Earth to sustainably support at current consumption levels, a new study warns.”
I wonder if those who performed this “study” have ever flown in an airplane and seen all the land where no one lives.
Yes, Ehrlich was yammering about this in the early 1970s. But there is a whole new generation that needs to be made fools of, so here they go again.
Those that refuse to learn history are doomed to repeat it.
Obviously, the liberal who wrote this never read the Population Bomb (1968) where NOTHING in that book came true.
Liberals should off themselves, and take one for the team.
Ehrlich is dead.
Earth is still here.
Overpopulation is so last century.
Women are no longer having enough children to replace the existing population.
Let us start “limiting” population growth by sterilizing EVERY member of the extended family members of these “researchers”.
True.
😂
I’m pretty old now, but I seem to recall hearing this when I was a little kid.
