Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger (D.) and other local authorities are under fire over a recent string of very high profile and preventable crimes committed by illegal aliens in the sanctuary state.
One of Spanberger’s first actions as governor was to sign an executive order barring state and local authorities from cooperating with federal authorities for federal immigration enforcement.
Since then, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has pleaded with Spanberger and Fairfax County officials to stop releasing dangerous criminals back into the community without notifying ICE.
In the past few weeks, United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged four hold requests for illegal immigrants charged with murder and other heinous crimes in Northern Virginia.
Just this week alone, ICE has issued two detainers for two Guatemalan nationals charged in separate murders in Fairfax County.
Misael Lopez Gomez, 28, was charged with second-degree murder and felony child abuse for allegedly beating his 3-month-old daughter to death. The baby was reportedly found unresponsive at the home on March 27, and died from blunt-force trauma. Gomez admitted to illegally crossing the United States’ southern border in July 2023 near Albuquerque, New Mexico, under the Biden administration.

“This cold-blooded killer murdered his own three-month-old daughter. We are calling on Governor Spanberger to commit to not releasing this barbaric animal from jail into Virginia communities,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement on April 1. “This monster should have never been allowed in our country by the Biden administration. We need cooperation from sanctuary politicians to stop criminals from being released from jail to perpetrate more crimes and create more innocent victims.”
Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, 38, was arrested on March 30, 2026, and charged with second-degree murder following a fatal machete stabbing of a man in Bailey’s Crossroads, Fairfax County, Virginia. According to DHS, he entered the U.S. illegally at an unknown place and time.

“Anibal Armando Chavarria Muy, a criminal illegal alien from Guatemala, was charged with second degree murder after repeatedly stabbing a man to death in Fairfax County. ICE is calling on Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and Virginia’s sanctuary politicians to not release this murderer back into our communities,” Bis stated on March 31. “This incident comes just one month after an innocent woman was murdered by another criminal illegal alien at a bus stop in Spanberger’s state. Open-border policies yet again have caused another preventable tragedy.”
Israel Flores Ortiz, a 19-year-old from El Salvador, is currently being held without bond in the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center after being charged in March with 13 counts of assault and battery for allegedly groping a dozen female classmates at Fairfax High School in Virginia. Specifically, he is accused of repeatedly creeping up behind the girls in crowded hallways and grabbing them between the legs. The assaults reportedly went on for several months.
Flores-Ortiz illegally entered the United States in 2024 and was released into the country under the Biden administration, according to DHS.

“This 19-year-old criminal illegal alien should NOT have been attending a Virginia high school and allowed to prey on innocent teenage girls. He now faces nine counts of assault and battery. This is yet another example of the Biden Administration’s failed open border policies,” said Bis. “We are calling on Fairfax County sanctuary politicians to NOT release this predator from jail back into our communities to assault more teenage women. Unfortunately, Governor Abigail Spanberger ended cooperation with ICE and is siding with criminal illegal aliens over American citizens.”
Abdul Jalloh, a 41-year-old Sierra Leone national who entered the U.S. illegally in 2012, is accused of fatally stabbing 41-year-old Stephanie Minter at a bus stop in Fairfax County in late February.
Jalloh’s criminal history includes “more than 30 arrests for charges of rape, malicious wounding, assault, drug possession, identity theft, trespassing, larceny, firing a weapon, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and pick pocketing,” according to DHS.

“We are calling on Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and Virginia’s sanctuary politicians to commit to not releasing this murderer and violent career criminal from their jail without notifying ICE,” Bis said in a statement on February 28. “This illegal alien’s murder of an innocent, beautiful American woman came less than 24 hours before Governor Spanberger’s demonization of ICE law enforcement. This heinous criminal is a perfect example of why we need cooperation from sanctuary jurisdictions and the importance of third country removals for the safety of the American people.”
Spanberger’s office released a statement in response telling DHS that it would not honor the request without “a signed judicial warrant.”
“As a former federal law enforcement officer who conducted joint search and arrest warrants alongside state and local officers, Governor Spanberger firmly believes that violent criminals who are in the United States illegally should be deported by immigration enforcement. DHS should request a signed judicial warrant to ensure this violent criminal is deported.”
The governor’s office argued that requiring a judicial warrant ensured due process, but DHS said it created an unnecessary barrier, as ICE typically cannot obtain such warrants unless a federal crime is involved. Murder is generally a state crime that falls under the jurisdiction of a local criminal judge.
All of the crimes occurred in Fairfax County, which “has a history of refusing to honor immigration detainers,” according to DHS.
“When will sanctuary politicians wake up and begin putting American lives FIRST?” the agency asked.

DemocRATs voted for exactly this.
It seems the whole of Northern Virginia is a CIA / deep-state political fiefdom.
It little bit like the Renaissance Papal States in Italy.
That B*tch and ALL sanctuary politicians should be arrested for "aiding and abetting" the criminal illegal aliens. When that happens and the sewer sludge dems start being prosecuted, you'll see "sanctuary cities" begin to disappear.
They don’t care.
The second guy looks like the alien at the start of Men in Black.
In the contrary, she should release even more murderers and rapists and fraudsters and robbers. It’s the CIA way - and Virginians voted for it. Or maybe they didn’t, but, the vote fraud machine has selected it for them
She/it/he won’t budge. It’s what she/it/he wanted.
No amount of pressure will move this hack into caring about innocent American lives. She’d sacrifice them all just to spite this president.
Note to Virginians from Texans….get a rope.

And Spanberger knew that when she asked for a judicial warrant. But to her idiot Democrat...but I repeat myself...followers it makes her sound reasonable.
Just like the mullahs in Iran, the dems just dig in no matter the
cost to the populace with their idiotic ideas.
Small price to pay for “fundamental transformation”.
Spanburger is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.
From what I’ve seen so far, the broad is 100% totally dizzy.
I think it’s time for the northern part of VA to be ceded to Maryland and let them deal with it. That way the rest of the state can get back to be a red state again.
The ICE non-cooperation issue is as important to Democrats as abortion. The chance of Spanberger changing course on this issue is 0%.
That’s him!
Yeah but smashberger knows better than ICE.
