But there is one type of glue that most kids ate (including me): "school paste" a.k.a. "library paste". it was just cornstarch, water, and mint flavoring, so it was non-toxic. It was messy and fun to play with. Some of the kids would devour large quantities of it without apparent ill effects.

These days schools use glue sticks. I can't say for sure whether they are purple.
