A Delta plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Brazil late Sunday after an apparent engine glitch sent flames and sparks shooting from the packed jet.
Delta Flight DL104, which was bound for Atlanta with 272 passengers and 14 crew on board, suffered a mechanical issue with its left engine as it was taking off at Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport.
The airline blamed a “mechanical issue” for the wild mishap.
“The Airbus A330-300 landed safely and was met by ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting), then customers were taken by bus to the terminal,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“The safety of our customers and crew is our highest priority. We apologize to our customers for this delay in their travels”
No injuries were reported.

Either a bird strike or a maintenance issue.

Sounds like a compressor stall. Not common but it does happen.
I was on an airbus 319 some years ago and that happened - a loud bang and then a shower of sparks from the left engine.
We were an hour or so into the flight so well above bird altitude. We made what felt like a long but normal landing short of our destination.

Yup - impressive ball of fire at night too. Worked a few TF33 (P&W JT3) compressor stall problems. Usually a bleed valve going wonky.
When pieces start coming out the back that’s a whole ‘nother story. That engine is well and truly trashed.
And telling the women screaming doesn’t help won’t work....
I get nervous every time I get on a plane, and there are No-Smoking signs in the cabin. I collect and restore vintage muscle cars. I know they are in tip-top condition, but I am NOT driving them for more than 20 miles in a trip. Old car = Unreliable
My Fiancée was on a Delta flight last week that got diverted because a passenger had a medical emergency. At the urging of the flight crew, she offered to help. There were three chubby women in braids, grandmother, daughter and grand-daughter, the two who were conscious were screaming their lungs out. (Yes, Boo-boo.) The grandmother had passed out. When she arrived the daughter was holding grandma tightly and informed her, “You don’t know nothing.” Not an auspicious start. The reason she volunteered and was asked to help is because, although she is a practicing oncologist, she is also board certified in emergency medicine and worked as an emergency room physician for four years.
Fortunately, there was a large, calm black male engineer who happened to be certified in CPR who also volunteered and managed to pry grandma out of the daughter’s arms and lay her flat on the floor where they could administer oxygen and take her pulse. The last thing anyone needed was two screaming women to add to the stress.
The pilot diverted to the nearest major airport. Fiancée wanted to continue to her destination where I was waiting. (Gramma is fine.) Airport medics took grammie, plane refueled and they arrived two hours late.
I understand that Delta has chosen to put money into OPEX and continue running an older fleet of aircraft while carriers like American have chosen to go deep in debt for newer airplanes with less maintenance burden.
Since most airplanes are kept essentially new by mandatory maintenance I wonder if this is true?
The oil pressure. I forgot to check the oil pressure. When Cramer hears about this, the ****’s going to hit the fan!

Used to test-run turbo-fans, (night shift) - when we would do surge-margin checks we would turn the lights out in the test cell - seeing that fire-ball never got old!
