Scotland’s looming energy crisis

Below is the transcript of a speech I gave at a Net Zero Watch event in Edinburgh on 9 March 2026:

.

Good evening, and thank you for inviting me to speak today.

Scotland is often described as an electricity superpower. Not only is that not true, the Scottish grid is actually extremely vulnerable, being held together by just two power stations: Peterhead and Torness.

So critical is this dependence that the National Energy System Operator, NESO, will not allow both to go on maintenance at the same time.

Yet within the next 5-6 years both could close.

Today I’m going to talk about grid stability and why Scotland is more vulnerable than the rest of Britain to blackouts. I’m then going to address our ongoing dependence on oil and gas in light of current world events.

We often hear politicians and commentators here in Scotland claiming that with its huge wind resources, Scotland can achieve energy independence. It is an appealing idea. Scotland has vast natural resources, a long Atlantic coastline exposed to powerful prevailing winds, and enormous potential for renewable generation. On paper it can look as though Scotland could produce far more electricity than it consumes.

But electricity systems are more complicated than simply producing energy.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

This article is long and very technical might be of interest to the more engineer minded people. It lays out a good case against green energy.

Basically it costs more and makes the grid unstable.

No need to cry for Scotland. They have oil up the wazoo.

Not crying for anyone who buys into the green energy scam.

However, it’s a great article with it’s technical analysis of WHY green energy is not feasible.

Life I’ve said before, I have no problem with the concept. More power to them. But for not, it is not feasible to implement. The technology just isn’t there to make it work they way they want. Or to make it mandatory against all reason.

the issue is actually pretty simple: AC grid frequency stability can be produced and paced only by the rotational momentum of REALLY YUGE ARSE electrical generators driven by fossil fuels or hydropower; all so-called alternative “renewable” wind and solar sources produce only DC current that must be harmonized with the existing grid frequency when converted to AC ... such power sources can only FOLLOW the grid frequency, not produce or maintain it ... period ... remove all REALLY YUGE ARSE rotational generators from an AC grid, and an AC grid ceases to exist ... period ...

And beyond cheaping out on any and everything possible.

Throw in a supreme arrogance factor.

I speak of their business management types, not the regular normal people who are stuck with them.

Here is the 2025 numbers directly from those tasked to keep them the energy Department.

https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q3-2025/pages/electricity-consumption/

You will notice burning things only made up for 6% or eberyGWh made and consumed.

https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q3-2025/pages/electricity-generation-and-supply/

https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q3-2025/pages/renewable-electricity-generation/

https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q3-2025/pages/renewable-electricity-capacity/

https://www.gov.scot/publications/energy-statistics-for-scotland-q3-2025/pages/renewable-electricity-pipeline/

Now look at where the wind farms are.

https://www.gov.scot/publications/public-perceptions-offshore-wind-farm-developments-scotland/pages/5/

Then look at the 100 meter winds right now those farms are in nearly a full gale with 15+ meters per second winds they are maxed out they won’t cut out till 30+ meters per second.

https://www.windy.com/?100m,56.948,-2.389,6

Scotland has some of the best wind in the world bar none. Anyone who has ever stood in Northern or Eastern Scotland can tell you this fact. Trees don’t grow because the simply cannot grow with wind fields like that.

Scotland exports sometimes 100+% of its grids needs and is still wasting 40% due to lack of the capacity of the HVAC lines to take the load south to Britain.

https://www.borderswindfarmwatch.com/news-1/scotland-wastes-40%25-of-wind-power-due-to-grid-bottlenecks

Fun fact Scotland had the world’s first on grid fast breeder reactor they still have a nuke near that site. You can see its contribution to total in the links above.

Look at the last link the pipeline one they are getting 30GW worth of storage BES like BYD 14.5MWh 20foot iso has gotten so cheap it’s under $14 per MWh in LCOS round trip. This means you can buy $10 or less wind and sell it for $24 at half the price of any other form of energy. Imported LNG or pipeline gas from the North Sea is $130 per megawatt hour in LHV of the gas alone that is BEFORE you.burn it and lose 40-60% in its LHV energy in a turbine. No gas turbine can touch $28 MWh none full stop.
