The pair met in the Oval Office and fielded questions from reporters, one of whom asked why Washington had not informed Tokyo of its plans to attack Iran.

"We went in very hard. We didn't tell anybody about it because we wanted surprise," he said. "Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Harbor."

Think the GOP can forget about the mid terms at the rate fuel prices and everything else is skyrocketing up...

I thought the midterms were this Fall, over a half year away.

You think this will be all cleaned up by November? Really? You must be joking as Iran will not stop anytime soon and time flies... These rising fuel prices will take months to even start going down and even slower in the supply chains...

Plus the GOP doesn’t want to win anything as they are a do nothing party so Trump will be hauled into Congressional hearings and buried in subpoenas that will reach the ceiling. And with all that Iran may have come to the shores of the US as drones of unknown actors flying over sensitive military bases...No this will not be cleaned up in a few weeks or months...

Good one! an even earlier surprise attack before Japan’s empire expansion. Port Arthur was against the Russians, in 1904.Apologize for the length of this post- but memory is triggered in many history nuts.

In re: your screen name tag— The British government aided the Japanese in the attack on the Tsar’s Russian Fleet anchored in Port Arthur. British intrigue against Tsarist Russia well before the start of WWI. Intrigue also with securing the Soleiman Masjid region of Iran for oil for the British Navy is interconnected with a British foreign agent who essentially aided oil rights for the Anglo-Persian Oil Company (but this is another story, all true).

No longer fiction (the British foreign agent, Sidney Reilly working under loose direction of the Foreign Section of the British Secret Service Bureau) documentary evidence indicates that agent Sidney Reilly working under the cover of running a timber company in Port Arthur, Manchuria in 1899(Sidney Reilly was a cover name created for one Sigmund Rosenblum, and also a timber company-by head of then British Special Branch William Melville).

Reilly was approached by Japanese Kempeitai and recruited (at that point working for both British and Japanese Intel) aided the Japanese navy by providing them with port maps of the mine fields placed there by the Russian navy. They sailed in and attacked the Russian ships at anchor and shelled the port town. They did not do quite as well as they might but they did kill some 31K russian navy personnel. Paid for this by the Japanese (in 1904). Interesting how the Brits were involved in this sneak attack— imo just as they were about not informing the US of the approaching Japanese fleet to bring the US into WWII at a time Britain without us likely would have failed.

Trump’s joke likely was not about Port Arthur in any case. Pearl Harbor being 85 years ago there are not many US or Japanese veterans left (if at all)- so this is only levity generated for the academic “historians” (esp. the Leftist ones!).

It’s definitely a strange way to approach allies for assistance.

Can’t believe what a buffoon he has turned into. When we get annihilated at the midterms, we can all look back fondly on the war in Iran, and all his stupid remarks. It’ll be a great way to have a laugh in a democrat dominated world.

What are you doing on this forum if you don't like us at all?   You could give us a magnum opus and leave.

Trump did it to Venezuela once. And he did it to Iran twice, each time when negotiations going on. Think about that when you watch that movie Tora, Tora, Tora.

Why are you here? You should leave.

An opus in the style of Libbylu would be fun. Looking forward to it.

The Pearl Harbor attack wasn’t in “the middle of the night” - it was 7:55am on a Sunday morning.

We have even better relations now with the new PM, who is from Abe’s (the murdered conservative former PM) party, which swept Japan’s legislature.

Get the feeling, unsurprising that most on FR are not up to date.

She did not take this as an insult, and despite ransomnote’s attempt to “read” her face— there is little to no “tell”. Privately, surprise is a highly thought of war tactic. Japanese have studied Sun Tzu. There are few left of a generation in Japan who would revel in the glory days of Tojo and the bushido boys who almost murdered the Emperor. All those kind of throwback cultural reactions went away after the Yukio Mishima led attack on a Japanese base in 1970 to try to start a coup to restore the military to power, protecting the then Emperor.

For further lookback on the reality of defeat See: post Nagasaki and Hiroshima and the Coup they tried to pull, to kill Hirohito and to further drive what remained of Japan right into fanatic mobilization of some 2 million plus civilians to stop invasion of the home islands. That is some story in and of itself.

“Can’t believe what a buffoon he has turned into.”

That was a Japanese reporter who was scolding him with that question.

However, it is unfortunate that we don’t have you leading the free world with your awesome wisdom and abilities; such a large tree along the sapling that is Trump.
